Joe Root smashed an incredible six off Hasan Ali’s bowling in Vitality T20 Blast 2024.
Birmingham Bears registered a resounding four-wicket triumph over the Yorkshire Vikings.
In a thrilling encounter at Edgbaston, the Birmingham Bears regained momentum with a resounding four-wicket triumph over the Yorkshire Vikings in the Vitality T20 Blast 2024 on Friday (June 14).
The match started with Yorkshire showing promise, bolstered by an opening stand featuring Joe Root and Dawid Malan. Root’s audacious strokeplay was evident when they added 62 for the second wicket. However, their innings derailed swiftly as Birmingham’s spin duo of Jake Lintott and Danny Briggs combined brilliantly to dismantle Yorkshire’s batting order as they picked three wickets each. Root’s dismissal, caught at short third man off Briggs, triggered a collapse that saw Yorkshire slump from a promising position to a modest total of 145 out in 19.5 overs. Nevertheless, a shot played by Root against the express pace of Hasan Ali stole the limelight.
In a pivotal moment during the match, Root showcased his exceptional batting prowess with an extraordinary reverse-scoop six off Ali. It unfolded during the fourth over of Yorkshire’s innings.
Ali delivered the ball wide outside the off stump, prompting Root to initially line up for a conventional shot towards the fine leg region. Nevertheless, displaying quick thinking and remarkable skill, Root adjusted his stroke at the last moment. Instead of going through with the original plan, he ingeniously redirected the ball over third man for a sensational six. This audacious display of innovation and execution highlighted Root’s ability to adapt swiftly and capitalize on scoring opportunities, momentarily shifting momentum in Yorkshire’s favor.
Chasing 146 for victory, Birmingham approached the chase with caution and aggression. Sam Hain anchored the innings with a composed unbeaten 53, guiding his team towards the target alongside aggressive cameos from Dan Mousley and Jake Bethell. Mousley’s belligerent knock from the outset kept the scoreboard ticking. At the same time, Bethell’s blistering cameo, highlighted by a massive six off Root, provided the final push. Despite losing quick wickets towards the end, Birmingham crossed the finish line comfortably with 11 balls to spare, showcasing their depth in batting and resilience under pressure.
Pakistan’s cricket captain, Babar Azam, enjoys immense popularity and adoration among cricket fans worldwide. Often referred to as the ‘King’ by his admirers, Babar has built a reputation for his elegant batting style and consistent performances across formats.
Despite his widespread acclaim, Babar has faced criticism for his performance in T20 Internationals. Concerns about his strike rate and overall impact in major tournaments have been raised. Critics argue that his statistics do not match the expectations set by his title as one of the premier batters in the world.
Former Pakistan opener Ahmed Shehzad has been particularly vocal in his critique of Babar. Shehzad recently accused Babar of having inflated statistics that do not reflect his actual performance in crucial matches. In a video shared by Geo News, Shehzad highlighted several areas where he believes Babar has underperformed and even claimed that Babar is a fake king.
“You have a strike rate of 112. You have an average of 26 in ICC events. You have played 207 balls in the powerplay but haven’t hit a single six. I think my stats from eight years ago are better than yours. You are a fake King! We play to help win Pakistan tournaments but you are only making a fool of fans on social media with your stats,” said Shehzad in a video shared by Geo News.
Furthermore, Shehzad alleged that Babar has deliberately excluded deserving domestic players to maintain personal relationships with certain underperforming players. He called for Babar to take responsibility for his failure to bring trophies to Pakistan.
“The least you can do now is raise your hand and say that ‘I was given all the support and resources from PCB. I got the players that I wanted, but I couldn’t deliver the silverware to Pakistan. I am really sorry.’ Now it is your time to go back to domestic cricket to improve your stats and then come back in the Pakistan team,” added Shehzad.
