But the situation took another turn when the ball, after being mishandled, was thrown by Matthew Hurst, the fielder at short third, to the non-striker’s end. 3. Law 31.7 Application: The critical factor was that Blatherwick, the bowler, had overstepped, rendering the delivery a no-ball. According to the MCC’s Law 31.7, the batsman cannot be dismissed as a hit-wicket if the bowler delivers a no-ball.

After extensive deliberation, the umpires ruled that due to the no-ball, the hit-wicket and run-out attempts were invalid, thereby allowing Masood to remain at the crease. This application of Law 31.7 ensured that despite the unusual circumstances, Masood was not dismissed, preserving his innings.

According to Law 31.7, “An umpire shall intervene if satisfied that a batter, not having been given out, has left the wicket under a misapprehension of being out. The umpire intervening shall call and signal dead ball to prevent further action by the fielding side and shall recall the batter.”
