In a crucial South Group encounter of the Vitality Blast 2024, Sussex faced Hampshire at the County Ground in Hove on June 10. Hampshire skipper James Vince won the toss and opted to field first. Sussex faced an early setback as opener Daniel Hughes was dismissed for a duck. However, Harrison Ward (39 off 20) and Tom Clark (37 off 26) built a solid partnership, stabilizing the innings after the early blow.
James Coles (46 off 33), Tom Alsop (35 off 17), and Danny Lamb (22 off 13) displayed remarkable resilience in the middle overs, propelling Sussex to a competitive total. A brief but impactful 13-run cameo from Nathan McAndrew further bolstered the score, helping Sussex post 200/7 in their 20 overs. Hampshire’s James Fuller and Brad Wheal took two wickets each, with Liam Dawson and Chris Wood contributing one wicket apiece.
In their chase, Hampshire got off to a dismal start, losing Ben McDermott and Tom Prest within the first two overs for just 8 runs. Skipper Vince (32 off 22) and Joe Weatherley (34 off 23) attempted to anchor the innings, but the pressure mounted as wickets fell regularly.
Toby Albert (27 off 15) and Benny Howell (32 off 17) showed great determination, providing some resistance. However, a lower-order collapse dashed Hampshire’s hopes. The team was bowled out for 178 in 19.1 overs, falling 22 runs short of the target. James Coles was the standout bowler for Sussex, claiming four wickets for 34 runs.
Sussex will next face Kent at the St Lawrence Ground in Canterbury on July 12, in what promises to be an exciting encounter. Meanwhile, Hampshire will take on Gloucestershire at the Rose Bowl in Southampton on the same day, in a match that could potentially turn their fortunes around.
Five matches were scheduled for Thursday, July 11, in the Vitality Blast 2024. Four games produced exciting results, but the clash between Derbyshire and Lancashire was abandoned due to rain, and no play was possible.
Worcestershire vs Leicestershire: Worcestershire secured a 16-run victory, powered by Adam Hose’s explosive half-century and a five-wicket haul from Matthew Waite. Despite Louis Kimber and Ben Cox’s efforts, Leicestershire fell short in their chase.
Yorkshire vs Durham: Yorkshire achieved a comprehensive seven-wicket win over Durham, thanks to a stellar bowling performance by Jafer Chohan, who took 5/14. Durham struggled throughout their innings and couldn’t withstand Yorkshire’s chase.
Middlesex vs Gloucestershire: Middlesex emerged victorious by 29 runs. Jack Davies and Martin Andersson both scored fifties. At the same time, Luke Hollman’s three-wicket haul was crucial in restricting Gloucestershire.
Essex vs Kent: Essex clinched a 22-run win against Kent. Solid contributions from their batters, including key knocks from Paul Walter and Adam Rossington, and disciplined bowling ensured Essex’s success.
