Five matches were scheduled for Thursday, July 11, in the Vitality T20 Blast 2024. While four of these games produced exciting results, the anticipated clash between Derbyshire and Lancashire was regrettably wiped out without bowling a single ball due to persistent rain.
In the North Group, Worcestershire emerged victorious against Leicestershire by 16 runs. Adam Hose was in blistering form, smashing a quickfire half-century. At the same time, Matthew Waite dismantled the opposition with a superb five-wicket haul.
Yorkshire also secured a dominant seven-wicket win over Durham, thanks mainly to an outstanding performance by leg-spinner Jafer Chohan, who finished with remarkable figures of 5/14.
The match between Derbyshire and Lancashire was abandoned due to rain, disappointing fans eager to see the two sides in action.
In the South Group, Middlesex claimed a 29-run victory over Gloucestershire. Jack Davies and Martin Andersson struck fifties, while Luke Hollman’s three-wicket haul sealed the win for Middlesex.
Essex continued their strong form with a 22-run win over Kent. Their frontline batters laid a solid foundation, and the bowlers capitalized on it to secure the victory.
On July 10, Sussex faced Hampshire in a crucial South Group fixture of the Vitality Blast 2024 at the County Ground in Hove. The match proved thrilling, with both teams vying for a much-needed win to bolster their standings.
Hampshire’s captain, James Vince, won the toss and opted to bowl first. Sussex, however, faced an early setback as opener Daniel Hughes departed for a duck. Despite this early blow, Harrison Ward (39 off 20) and Tom Clark (37 off 26) formed a vital partnership that helped Sussex recover from the shaky start.
The middle order further solidified Sussex’s position, with James Coles top-scoring with a well-crafted 46 off 33 balls. Tom Alsop contributed a quickfire 35 off 17, and Danny Lamb chipped in with 22 off 13, pushing Sussex to a competitive total of 200/7 in their allotted 20 overs. Hampshire’s James Fuller and Brad Wheal each took two wickets, while Liam Dawson and Chris Wood picked up one apiece.
In response, Hampshire’s chase got off to a disastrous start. They lost Ben McDermott and Tom Prest within the first two overs, leaving them reeling at 8/2. Captain James Vince (32 off 22) and Joe Weatherley (34 off 23) attempted to stabilize the innings, forming a crucial partnership to keep their side in the game.
Toby Albert (27 off 15) and Benny Howell (32 off 17) delivered quick knocks to revive Hampshire’s hopes. Still, a collapse in the lower order dashed their chances. Hampshire was eventually bowled out for 178 in 19.1 overs, falling short by 22 runs. James Coles was the standout bowler for Sussex, claiming four wickets for 34 runs, while Jack Carson provided excellent support with figures of 1/17 in his two overs.
