Rinku Singh, a consistent run-scorer for Team India and a standout performer in the IPL, recently opened up about his support from captain Rohit Sharma after being left out of The fifteen-member Indian team for the 2024 T20 World Cup. Despite his strong performances, Rinku could not secure a spot in the team due to India’s decision to opt for four spin options. While Rinku’s exclusion sparked debate among fans and cricket experts, he remains optimistic, bolstered by Rohit’s encouragement.
In an interview, Rinku shared Rohit Sharma’s message to him after the squad announcement. According to him, Rohit praised his efforts and reminded him that missing out on the World Cup should not define his career. Rohit emphasized that setbacks are a part of every player’s journey and that Rinku’s time would come. Rohit Bhai told me to stay focused and keep working hard and that opportunities would come my way again. He reminded me that I am still young, and the future is bright, Rinku revealed. This message of support from Rohit helped ease the disappointment of missing out on one of the most prestigious tournaments in international cricket.
Despite his outstanding batting statistics and his exceptional form for Team India in the months preceding the World Cup, Rinku was left out of the starting eleven. Rinku was known for his calm temperament under pressure and his ability to play match-winning innings. He had been a regular contributor in India’s T20 lineup. However, a somewhat inconsistent IPL 2024 season with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) contributed to the selectors’ decision to omit him from the final squad, instead naming him as a traveling reserve.
Thinking back on the IPL season, Rinku recognized the difficulties he had with KKR’s effort. Over the years, Rinku has played a significant role in several of KKR’s major triumphs, including the team’s IPL championship. One of his strongest suit has always been his ability to perform well under duress, especially in the middle order.
Rinku also highlighted Virat Kohli’s enthusiasm for the game and his ability to inspire younger players while applauding Kohli’s leadership approach. Virat bhai is someone who sets an exemplary example. We are all inspired by his work ethic and determination,” Rinku remarked. Interestingly, the young cricketer recently mentioned that if he ever moves on from KKR, his dream would be to play for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), a team associated with Kohli’s legacy.
Although Rinku Singh’s omission from the T20 World Cup squad may have been disappointing, Rohit Sharma’s support and admiration for Virat Kohli’s leadership have only strengthened his resolve. With his talent and determination, it seems only a matter of time before Rinku makes his mark on the international stage again.
“He (Rohit Sharma) came to me and said that it is okay, I’m still young, and there are many more tournaments to come. There is a World Cup every two years, so I shouldn’t be disappointed by this but focus on my game instead,” Rinku said in an interview to News24.
Rinku Singh was called up for India’s five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe right after being left off of the T20 World Cup roster, and he played in each game as a middle-order batter. It was this chance that helped him recover and show off his skills. Rinku’s consistent performance with the bat helped stabilize the team’s middle order and quickly became a crucial player in the series.
Following the Zimbabwe tour, Rinku continued his impressive form in the T20I series against Sri Lanka. While he is primarily known for his batting, Rinku surprised many by delivering with the ball in the final T20I. Bowling the penultimate over, Rinku picked up two crucial wickets, turning the match in India’s favor and securing a series win. His unanticipated addition to the ball showed off his adaptability and capacity to step up under duress.
Rinku’s overall statistics in T20Is for India have been outstanding. In 17 innings, he boasts an impressive average of nearly 60 and a strike rate of 174, showcasing his ability to score quickly while maintaining consistency. Even more remarkably, Rinku has remained not out in 10 of those 17 innings, underlining his knack for finishing games and handling tense moments with composure.
Rinku also spoke highly of Virat Kohli’s leadership style, acknowledging his positive influence on his career. He highlighted how Kohli’s leadership has motivated him and the team while praising Kohli’s enthusiasm, work ethic, and leading by example.
“I like Virat Kohli as well because aggression is very important while leading a team. So, his captaincy was also very good,” he said. Rinku had recently revealed that he would like to play for Kohli’s franchise Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) if he is not retained by KKR.
Rinku Singh is currently leading the Meerut Mavericks in the Uttar Pradesh T20 League (UP T20), where he has been showcasing his leadership skills on the domestic stage. Despite his strong performances, Rinku has not been selected for any of the four squads in the upcoming Duleep Trophy, scheduled for September. This exclusion has raised some eyebrows, but Rinku remains focused on his current role with the Mavericks, aiming to significantly impact the UP T20 League.
