The Uttarakhand Premier League featured three women’s and six men’s teams, highlighting a solid commitment to promoting women’s cricket alongside men’s competition.
Just days after the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) unveiled franchise-based T20 leagues for both men and women, the Cricket Association of Uttarakhand (CAU) has announced its own venture, the Uttarakhand Premier League (UPL). This initiative marks a significant milestone for cricket in the region, inviting expressions of interest from individuals and businesses eager to acquire franchises in this exciting new league.
The UPL represents a collaborative effort to enhance the profile of cricket across Uttarakhand. By opening its doors to business entities and individual investors, the CAU seeks to cultivate a strong foundation for the sport in the state. This move boosts local cricket and creates opportunities for investment and community engagement, allowing franchise owners to play an active role in nurturing local talent.
The league would give Uttarakhand athletes a platform with three women’s teams and six men’s teams. This emphasis on local representation aims to foster pride and recognition for the state’s cricketing talent. The allocation of franchise teams will be handled by the UPL governing council, ensuring that the process is fair and transparent, reinforcing trust and enthusiasm among potential investors.
The UPL aims to create an engaging and competitive environment where franchise owners are encouraged to invest in the growth of local players. By actively participating in the league, these owners will support cricket development in Uttarakhand and promote a culture of sportsmanship and community involvement. This sense of cooperation is crucial to creating a long-term, sustainable cricket ecology.
To ensure a world-class experience for players and fans, the CAU has partnered with a reputable third-party organization that manages major cricket leagues. This organization has a proven track record, having successfully overseen events such as the Indian Premier League (IPL) and T10 leagues. The partnership underscores CAU’s commitment to delivering high-quality cricketing experiences and elevating the standard of play in Uttarakhand.
A significant development in this initiative is signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the CAU and the third-party organization. This agreement marks a decisive shift toward a franchise-based model similar to the IPL. Like in the IPL, teams in the UPL will bid for talented players from a designated pool, fostering a competitive spirit among franchises. This bidding process not only creates excitement around player acquisitions but also provides an opportunity for local players to showcase their skills on a larger stage.
The establishment of the UPL is expected to profoundly impact cricket in Uttarakhand. It will spotlight the region’s talent and attract attention from cricket enthusiasts and potential investors, further promoting the sport. As franchises are formed and the league takes shape, there is great anticipation regarding the opportunities it will create for aspiring cricketers, coaches, and fans.
Mahim Verma, Secretary CAU said,”We are delighted that CAU is stating its own franchisee based T20 league this year. This league is sure to generate a lot of excitement and provide a platform for local talent to showcase their skills.”
Those interested in acquiring a franchise are invited to submit their expressions of interest to operations@uplt20.com by 6 PM IST on April 10, 2024. The final say on decisions is held by the governing council. The inaugural season of the Uttarakhand Premier League (UPL) is set to take place in the first week of June, featuring a competitive mix of local cricketers from Uttarakhand.
Previously, the Cricket Association of Uttar Pradesh successfully hosted a franchise-based premier league. Notably, Sameer Rizvi, a standout player from the UP T20 League who represented the Kanpur Superstars, is now part of the Chennai Super Kings in the ongoing IPL 2024. His remarkable 47-ball century during the UP T20 League drew significant attention, leading CSK to invest a staggering ₹8.4 crore to secure the talented right-handed batter.
