Imad Wasim and Haider Ali delivered standout performances as Islamabad United secured a five-wicket victory over Peshawar Zalmi in Eliminator 2 of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season, held at Karachi’s National Bank Cricket Arena.
This win marks United’s first PSL final appearance since 2018. They will now face the Multan Sultans on March 18 at the same venue.
The chase began with Zalmi’s spinners taking early control, as Saim Ayub dismissed Alex Hales for just one run and followed up by removing Salman Ali Agha for five runs in his next over.
The promising left-arm spinner dismissed United captain Shadab Khan for a duck. Martin Guptill, who was aggressive against Saim Ayub, scored 22 runs in a single over but was dismissed in the final over of the powerplay, leaving United struggling at 50/4.
United needed a stabilizing presence, and Imad Wasim delivered. He first formed a crucial partnership with Azam Khan and then with Haider Ali.
Azam contributed 22 runs from 17 balls, including a four and a six, before being dismissed by Luke Wood, ending a vital 41-run stand.
Haider Ali entered with a clear intent and aggressively targeted the Zalmi bowlers from the outset. He and Imad Wasim took strategic risks while maintaining the required run rate, establishing a 98-run partnership for the sixth wicket.
Imad notched his first half-century of the season, finishing unbeaten on 59 from 40 balls, while Haider blasted a quickfire 52 off 29 deliveries, including five sixes and two fours.
Earlier, Saim Ayub’s dazzling 73-run innings and Mohammad Haris’ 40 helped Zalmi post a total of 185/5.
After being asked to bat first by United, Zalmi made a strong start with their in-form opening pair, Babar Azam and Saim Ayub, setting up a solid foundation for a significant total.
Saim took the lead in the opening partnership, while Babar adopted a more measured approach until Naseem Shah dismissed him after he scored 72 runs.
