In a significant leadership change ahead of the ninth edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), South African cricketer Rilee Rossouw has been named the new captain of the Quetta Gladiators. Rossouw replaces former skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed, who had led the team to three finals and their sole title win in 2019. This decision marks the end of an eight-year stint for Sarfaraz as the Gladiators’ captain.
Left-handed Pakistani batter Saud Shakeel has been appointed the Gladiators’ vice-captain for the upcoming season. Rossouw and Shakeel emerged as top contenders for captaincy after the franchise opted for a change in leadership. The shift in captaincy for Quetta Gladiators marks a significant turning point for the team as they strive to enhance their performance and secure more victories in the prestigious Pakistan Super League (PSL) tournament.
Although Rilee Rossouw has never captained a professional T20 match before, his impressive track record in the PSL speaks for itself. As an overseas batter, Rossouw has accumulated more runs than any other player in the league. In 74 matches, he has amassed an impressive 1,867 runs at an average of 34.57 and a healthy strike rate of 146.54, including two centuries. Rossouw’s experience as a two-time PSL champion, with the Gladiators in 2019 and the Multan Sultans in 2020, further demonstrates his understanding of what it takes to succeed in the tournament.
Despite the change in leadership, former Pakistani skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed stood alongside other PSL captains during the unveiling of the PSL trophy in Lahore on Tuesday morning. Under Sarfaraz’s guidance, the Gladiators had a mixed performance in the 2023 season, finishing sixth in the standings with six points from 10 matches. The franchise is now looking to turn a new page with Rossouw at the helm, aiming to improve its overall performance and make a more substantial impact in the upcoming PSL 9 season.
“Sarfaraz Ahmed has always been in our hearts” – Quetta Gladiators’ owner
In a recent interview with Cricket Pakistan, Nadeem Omar, the esteemed owner of the Quetta Gladiators, expressed unwavering confidence in their gloveman’s leadership abilities. As a seasoned business executive and former scrabble player, Omar has garnered national and international recognition for his significant contributions to the world of sports. His dedication to excellence is evident in his professional endeavors and his commitment to fostering a strong, cohesive team dynamic within the Quetta Gladiators.
As the team’s owner since its inception in 2016, Nadeem Omar has played an instrumental role in shaping the Quetta Gladiators’ identity and fostering a sense of unity among players and fans alike. The team’s name and iconic logo, inspired by the ancient Roman ‘Galea’ helmet worn by gladiators, were unveiled during a ceremony held by Omar himself. The logo features two bats poised as gladiatorial swords, symbolizing the team’s determination and fighting spirit on the field.
The Quetta Gladiators’ primary kit colors, purple and golden, were also revealed during a launch ceremony held in Quetta in January 2016. The team’s chant, “Kai Kai Quetta,” draws inspiration from the war cry “Kai Kai,” coined by the Baloch Regiment during World War II. Translating to “we are coming,” the chant serves as a powerful rallying call for players and fans, further demonstrating the strong camaraderie that Nadeem Omar has helped instill within the Quetta Gladiators community.
“Sarfaraz Ahmed has always been in our hearts. He has played a big part in Quetta Gladiators’ success. He has led for 8 years. For Pakistan team, Karachi, and our club, he has always fulfilled his duties with dedication. Unfortunately, the franchise’s performance has been up and down in the last 3-4 years. This time the team has improved. Now our new coach Shane Watson has come to Pakistan. He believes Sarfaraz should be given a break from captaincy.”
