Rawalpindi Administration Bolsters Security for Upcoming PSL Matches – Pakistan Super League

Pakistan’s eastern city of Rawalpindi is gearing up to host a series of Pakistan Super League (PSL) matches from March 2 to 10. As cricket enthusiasts eagerly await this highly anticipated event, the local administration has taken stringent measures to ensure the safety and security of players, officials, and spectators.

The Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) has reported that over 5,000 police personnel, including elite forces, will be deployed. To further enhance security, snipers and police officers equipped with advanced security tools will be stationed along critical routes and on rooftops near the stadium, providing a comprehensive safety net for all attendees. With these security measures in place, Rawalpindi is set to offer cricket fans an unforgettable experience during the upcoming PSL matches.

In response to the upcoming Pakistan Super League (PSL) matches scheduled in Rawalpindi from March 2-10, the city’s administration has taken comprehensive measures to ensure the safety of players and citizens. With the popular cricket tournament attracting thousands of fans and featuring local and international cricket stars, the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) reported on the extensive security plan.

According to the report, over 5,000 police personnel, including elite forces, will be deployed to provide security coverage for the PSL matches. The Rawalpindi administration has finalized a security plan that includes stationing snipers and police officers equipped with advanced security tools along critical routes and rooftops near the stadium. To further strengthen security measures, 750 police officers will be assigned to manage and oversee the teams’ movement from the Islamabad airport to the districts of Attock and Rawalpindi.

The PSL matches draw large crowds in cities such as Lahore, Multan, Karachi, and Rawalpindi. As a result, authorities have been directed to ensure the best possible security arrangements for the cricket matches, considering the convenience and safety of players and fans. The Rawalpindi District Police, under the guidance of City Police Officer Syed Khalid Mehmood Hamdani, is leveraging all available resources to provide foolproof security, including the establishment of three.

“Under the security plan finalized for PSL matches, over 5,000 police personnel, including elite forces, would be deployed to provide foolproof security cover to the matches,” the APP said.

It said the security plan includes closing stations, managing traffic, and “strict surveillance” to ensure the safety of the cricketers, officials, and spectators.

It said around 750 police officers would manage the teams’ movement from the Islamabad airport across the districts of Attock and Rawalpindi.

“Snipers, along with police equipped with advanced security tools, would be stationed along critical routes and rooftops near the stadium,” the report said. “These measures are designed to ensure a secure environment for the event.”

With the city’s extensive experience hosting large-scale events, officials are confident in ensuring smooth traffic flow and minimizing congestion. Pakistan has had a history of militant attacks targeting cricketers and cricket events, most notably the 2009 attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore. The incident led to a decline in international teams touring Pakistan, forcing the country to host matches in the UAE for several years. However, as security improved, global teams gradually returned to Pakistan.

In recent months, Pakistan has experienced a surge in militant violence, particularly in its western regions bordering Afghanistan, following the breakdown of a fragile truce between the state and the Pakistani Taliban. This has further underscored the importance of robust security measures at high-profile events such as the PSL matches in Rawalpindi.

The Rawalpindi administration aims to provide a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants and spectators at the upcoming PSL matches by taking these comprehensive security and traffic management steps. With the cooperation of local authorities, security forces, and citizens, Rawalpindi is well-prepared to host a successful series of cricket matches.
