Saim Ayub, the Pakistani batter who played for Peshawar Zalmi in PSL season nine, has etched his name in history by becoming the youngest Pakistani cricketer to hit 100 T20 sixes. This remarkable feat is a testament to his talent and dedication.
The talented batter achieved this significant milestone during yesterday’s Eliminator 2 match against Islamabad United. This accomplishment highlights the player’s impressive performance and skill, contributing to their growing reputation in the tournament.
At only 21 years and 297 days old, Ayub broke the previous record set by Haider Ali, who reached this milestone at 22 and 259 days.
Saim Ayub leads the PSL 9 in sixes, launching 21 sixes across 11 innings.
It is worth noting that Islamabad United defeated Peshawar Zalmi by five wickets in Eliminator 2. The match was a thrilling encounter, with both teams displaying exceptional cricketing skills and sportsmanship.
Imad Wasim and Haider Ali’s 98-run partnership for the sixth wicket was a turning point in the match. It not only revived United’s hopes but also added an element of thrill and excitement to the game.
Imad Wasim recorded his first fifty of the season, remaining not out with 59 runs off 40 balls. Meanwhile, Haider Ali blasted 52 from 29 balls, including five mighty sixes and two fours.
United’s chase began with a few setbacks. They lost three wickets in just four overs, managing only 21 runs on the board. However, their resilience and determination were evident as they continued to fight for victory.
In-form opener Martin Guptill mounted a brief recovery, hitting 22 runs in an over off Saim Ayub. However, he was dismissed by Khurram Shehzad on the last ball of the powerplay.
Guptill was a key contributor for United, amassing 34 runs from 21 balls, featuring five boundaries and a six.
With the scoreboard at 50/4 after six overs, Azam Khan joined forces with Imad Wasim to orchestrate a comeback.
The duo batted intelligently for about five overs until Luke Wood removed Azam Khan for 22 on the final delivery of the 11th over, stalling United’s recovery. Imad and Haider led the team to a thrilling victory despite this setback.
This marks United’s first appearance in a PSL final since 2018, breaking a six-year absence from the league’s championship match. On March 18, they will face the Multan Sultans in the final, which will take place at the same venue where the team has previously competed in the tournament.
Saim Ayub’s vibrant innings of 73 runs, which included several powerful sixes, and Mohammad Haris’ contribution of 40 runs propelled Zalmi to a competitive total of 185/5. Ayub’s innings played a crucial role in setting up the match for Zalmi.
Naseem Shah spearheaded United’s bowling effort, securing 3/30 in his four overs, while Shadab Khan and Obed McCoy each contributed with one wicket.
United will take on the Multan Sultans in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) final scheduled for March 18. This matchup comes after United secured their spot in the final by defeating Peshawar Zalmi in the Qualifier.
This marks United’s return to the PSL final for the first time since 2018, ending a six-year wait. Meanwhile, the Multan Sultans are making their fourth consecutive appearance in the final, showcasing their consistent dominance in the league over the years.
