Recall that Islamabad United, under the leadership of Shadab Khan, secured their third PSL title. Having previously won in 2016 and 2018, they have established themselves as the most successful team in the tournament’s history.
The match was thrillingly decided on the final ball, with Hunain Shah coming in to bat needing just one run to win. The young player astutely spotted a gap at point and struck the ball for a boundary, securing the victory.
Islamabad United lost three wickets during the powerplay, leaving them at 55-3. However, seasoned batsman Martin Guptill and explosive hitter Azam Khan formed a vital 47-run partnership, putting their team back in control of the match.
However, Guptill was run out after scoring 50 runs off 32 balls following a minor miscommunication with Azam. This unfortunate mix-up left the team in a precarious position of 102-4 after 12.5 overs. The run-out disrupted the momentum, and the team faced a challenging situation as they sought to stabilize their innings and push towards a competitive total.
Following Azam’s departure, Imad Wasim, the standout performer of the eliminators, and Naseem Shah stepped up lower down the order. Wasim contributed 19 runs, while Shah added 17, both playing crucial roles in bolstering the team’s total.
Earlier in the first innings, the Sultans narrowly avoided a major setback when Islamabad’s fast bowler, Naseem Shah, dismissed their captain, Mohammad Rizwan, in the opening over. However, Rizwan was granted a reprieve as Shah had overstepped, and the delivery was deemed a no-ball.
Nevertheless, the Sultans’ momentary relief was short-lived. Yasir Khan and David Willey combined forces to dismiss Imad Wasim in the second over. This crucial breakthrough came as a significant blow, as Wasim had been a critical player in the eliminators. His removal shifted the momentum back in favor of the opposition, disrupting the Sultans’ attempts to stabilize their innings and gain a firm footing in the match.
After losing two early wickets, Multan sought stability, with Rizwan and Usman Khan forging a vital 53-run partnership. The Sultans appeared to be gaining control, but their captain fell in the 10th over, having scored 26 runs, including three boundaries.
Following Rizwan’s dismissal, wickets continued to tumble, but Usman remained steadfast, relentlessly attacking the Islamabad bowlers. The UAE international soon reached his half-century but could not stay much longer, as Shadab Khan dismissed him after he had amassed 57 runs off 40 balls.
The Sultans might fall short of 130 runs, losing nine wickets for 127 runs with three overs remaining. However, Iftikhar remained at the crease, guiding Rizwan’s team to a competitive total by the end of the innings.
