Alex Hartley, the spin bowling coach for the Multan Sultans in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), has confirmed that she is fasting during the holy month of Ramadan.
Hartley, a former English cricketer, is making waves in PSL 9 by breaking new ground. Her crucial contributions have been instrumental in the Multan Sultans’ journey to the final, set to take place at the National Bank Stadium in Karachi on March 18.
Hartley explained that since all the team members were observing fasts, she wanted to experience it and understand how competing after a full day of fasting feels.
“It is Ramadan and the lads are fasting. So I thought I really want to understand how they’re feeling when they get to the game. I think it is only fair that the players are doing it, so I should join them [in fasting],” Hartley told BBC 5 Live Sport.
She discussed the difficulties she encounters in her daily fasting routine, acknowledging that it is indeed “very hard”.
“We have just broken our fast now after we fasted all day. I have had some dates and some salad. We can eat till 4 am and then we don’t eat again till 6:40 pm the next day. It is hard, so hard,” she explained.
“I go to bed at 4 am and sleep during the day, as our games start at 9 pm in the night,” she concluded.
Remember that the Sultans were the first team to secure a spot in the final of PSL’s ninth edition, triumphing over Babar Azam’s Peshawar Zalmi in the Qualifier on March 14.
Mohammad Rizwan’s team effortlessly chased down the 147-run target, securing their place in the final for the fourth consecutive year.
They will next face the winner of the second eliminator, which will be contested between Peshawar Zalmi and Islamabad United in Karachi on Saturday.
The 25-year-old departed from the team midway through the season.

Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram has explained why West Indies batsman Sherfane Rutherford is not included in Quetta Gladiators’ lineup for the Eliminator 1 match against Islamabad United.
The 25-year-old departed the team midway through the season but rejoined just before Eliminator 1. Unfortunately, the Gladiators were defeated by United by 39 runs in that match, effectively ending his participation in the tournament.
In the meantime, former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram disclosed that Gladiators head coach Shane Watson decided not to include Rutherford in the lineup.
The former Australian player had previously informed the team that no one could exit the squad midway through the season for any reason.
“He [Watson] told previously nobody would leave the side in the middle and if anyone comes back, he won’t induct. Watson did something we Pakistanis can’t even think and did the right thing,” Wasim said on a local sports channel.
In contrast, former cricketer Hafeez remarked, “He set the right example but at the time management did the wrong thing to call him back.”
It is important to note that the victory allowed United to progress to the second Elimination round, where they will face Babar Azam’s Peshawar Zalmi this evening.
United won the toss and chose to bowl first. Zalmi made three alterations to their lineup, whereas Shadab Khan’s team stuck with their original XI.
Peshawar Zalmi’s lineup: Babar Azam (captain), Saim Ayub, Mohammad Haris (wicketkeeper), Tom Kohler-Cadmore, Hussain Talat, Rovman Powell, Aamir Jamal, Luke Wood, Mehran Mumtaz, Arif Yaqoob, and Khurram Shahzad.
Islamabad United’s squad: Shadab Khan (captain), Alex Hales, Martin Guptill, Salman Ali Agha, Azam Khan (wicketkeeper), Haider Ali, Imad Wasim, Faheem Ashraf, Naseem Shah, Hunain Shah, and Obed McCoy.
Yesterday, the Gladiators faltered in their pursuit of 175 runs, falling short by 39 runs.
Batting first, Islamabad United managed to score 174/9 despite a sluggish start.
The team that emerges victorious from the clash between United and Zalmi will face the Multan Sultans in the final on March 17.
