Pakistani cricketers are increasingly increasingly frustrated with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) over denials of No Objection Certificates (NOCs) for participating in overseas T20 leagues. The frustration has escalated to the point where several players are reportedly considering terminating their central contracts with the PCB. The most recent example involves batter Mohammad Haris, who was denied an NOC to participate in the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), even after arriving in Bangladesh to play for the Chattogram Challengers.
In addition to Haris, fellow cricketers Zaman Khan and Fakhar Zaman have also been refused NOCs, adding to the tension between the players and the PCB. These denials impact the players’ opportunities to showcase their talents globally and affect their potential earnings. As a result, some of Pakistan’s top cricket stars are now mulling over the possibility of severing ties with the PCB, which could have significant implications for the country’s cricket landscape and the performance of its national team.
“The matter has come to a head because recently the board refused NOCs to some players including Zaman Khan, Fakhar Zaman, Muhammad Haris to play in the Bangladesh Premier League on the grounds that they had already played two leagues besides the Pakistan Super League,” a source told the PTI.
The Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) stance on No Objection Certificates (NOCs) continues to frustrate Pakistani cricketers, with several players contemplating ending their central contracts. In addition to Mohammad Haris’ recent NOC denial for the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), Haris Rauf faced challenges securing approval for the Big Bash League (BBL) 2023-24 season.
Moreover, the PCB has shown reluctance to approve NOCs for other ongoing T20 leagues, such as the SA20 and the ILT20. This cautious approach impacts players’ opportunities to participate in international tournaments and showcase their skills globally, further exacerbating the tension between players and the PCB. As the situation intensifies, it remains to be seen how these disputes will impact the future of Pakistan’s cricket landscape and the player’s relationships with the governing body.
“The players feel that when there is no Pakistan assignment before the PSL why should the board stop them from playing in other leagues where they have good contracts,” another source told PTI.
The current guidelines limiting Pakistani cricketers to participating in only two overseas leagues, in addition to the Pakistan Super League (PSL), were introduced during the tenure of former PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf. These guidelines have been a source of contention among players seeking opportunities to showcase their talents and earn additional income through international tournaments.
Ashraf’s administration aimed to balance players’ international commitments and participation in domestic leagues. However, the restrictions have faced criticism from players and stakeholders, leading to ongoing discussions about potentially revising the guidelines to better accommodate players’ interests and the growth of Pakistani cricket on the global stage.
Pakistan’s cricket icons, Babar Azam and Shaheen Afridi, have expanded their horizons by securing contracts with overseas T20 leagues. Babar Azam represents Rangpur Riders in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), contributing his exceptional batting prowess to the team. Simultaneously, Shaheen Afridi has been signed by the Desert Vipers in the ILT20, allowing him to showcase his formidable bowling skills internationally.
The Men in Green’s preparation for the 2024 T20 World Cup kicked off under Shaheen Afridi’s leadership. Still, they faced initial challenges during their five-match T20I series against New Zealand, losing by a 4-1 margin. The team management, spearheaded by Mohammed Hafeez, has implemented strategic changes to improve performance.
However, these adjustments have yet to yield the desired results, leaving the players and fans alike eager to see how the team will evolve and grow in the lead-up to the highly anticipated tournament.
