Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi announced a significant initiative during a press conference in Islamabad on Tuesday. The PCB has arranged a ten-day training camp for the men’s national cricket team with the country’s army. This ambitious move aims to improve players’ fitness levels and promote team building as they gear up for crucial international matches.
The decision to involve the army in the training camp underscores the PCB’s commitment to placing national duties above participation in T20 leagues. By aligning players’ priorities with national pride, Naqvi has expressed full support for the team, stating that the army will significantly enhance the players’ physical and mental strength. The innovative approach is expected to reinvigorate the Men in Green, boosting their performance and fitness levels as they prepare for the upcoming T20 series against New Zealand and England and the highly anticipated 2024 T20 World Cup.
While the players are engaged with their respective franchises in the Pakistan Super League, the army-led training camp will mark their return to national duty. Naqvi’s vision for the camp is to ensure that every player’s fitness is top-notch, fostering unity and enhancing the team’s overall performance.
The PCB Chairman’s announcement is crucial for Pakistan cricket, with the team looking to rebound from recent struggles. By forging a partnership with the army and focusing on the players’ physical and mental well-being, the PCB aims to create a solid foundation for future success and restore the nation’s pride in its beloved cricket team.
“I have asked the board to make a plan that gets every player’s fitness up to speed. You’ll have to make a proper effort for that. We have New Zealand coming up, then Ireland, England and the T20 World Cup. I wondered, ‘When will we train?’ but there was no time. However, we’ve found a window, where we’ve organised a camp in Kakul (military academy) from March 25 to
April 8. The Pakistan Army will be involved in your training, and hopefully, they’ll help you out.”
Earlier this year, Pakistan’s cricket landscape was marred by controversy. Chief Selector Wahab Riaz revealed in a Geo News interview that some players couldn’t even run two kilometers. Former coach Mohammad Hafeez further substantiated this alarming claim, asserting that a few players had failed fitness tests before the Australia tour.
These disconcerting disclosures brought the fitness standards of Pakistan’s national cricket team under intense scrutiny. Riaz’s statement implied a severe lack of conditioning among certain players. At the same time, Hafeez’s revelation suggested that the team management had perhaps turned a blind eye to these issues. These incidents and the team’s recent lackluster performances have highlighted the pressing need for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to address the fitness concerns plaguing the Men in Green.
Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has strongly called on players to prioritize their national duties over franchise commitments. In a recent statement, Naqvi emphasized the importance of representing the country and reiterated his unwavering support for those who put the national team first. Naqvi’s remarks come after ongoing discussions regarding players’ workload management and availability for international assignments. His stance highlights the PCB’s dedication to fostering a strong and united national team that upholds the nation’s pride on the global cricket stage. He asserted:
“I will support you 100%, but I’ll just ask you to make Pakistan your first priority, and T20 leagues your second priority. It’s unfortunate when money becomes first priority and the country second. If you do that, then we might have a problem. We can even look at central contracts and bolster them further if you desire, but you must be available for Pakistan first and foremost.”
