In a significant setback for the Lahore Qalandars, Afghanistan’s spin sensation Rashid Khan has been ruled out of the upcoming ninth edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL). The star leg-spinner, who recently underwent lower-back surgery, is still recovering, as confirmed by Afghanistan’s head coach, Jonathan Trott, and the Qalandars’ Chief Executive. This untimely development will undoubtedly leave a considerable void in the Qalandars’ bowling attack, given Rashid’s exceptional track record and international experience.
Rashid Khan’s absence will force the Lahore Qalandars to revisit their strategic plans for the PSL 9, as the Afghan wizard’s match-winning abilities and leadership skills were expected to play a crucial role in the team’s success. As the franchise gears up for the upcoming season, fans and management eagerly await updates on who will fill the legendary spinner’s shoes and help lead the team to victory. The Qalandars will be able to acquire a replacement for Rashid Khan in the supplementary and replacement draft, which is scheduled to take place virtually on Monday, as confirmed by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
Since his PSL debut in 2021, Rashid Khan has had an impressive stint with the Lahore Qalandars, amassing 44 wickets in 28 matches at an economy rate of 6.13 and an average of 15.47. The 25-year-old Afghan player emerged as the franchise’s leading wicket-taker in the 2023 edition, claiming 20 wickets in 11 matches at an average of 14.05. His exceptional performances were pivotal in the Qalandars clinching their second consecutive PSL title under Shaheen Shah Afridi’s captaincy.
Atif Rana, the Chief Executive of Lahore Qalandars, expressed his thoughts on Rashid Khan’s unavailability in a statement by Cricket Pakistan. Pk, acknowledging the significant impact of this development on the team’s composition and plans for PSL 9. Rana’s statement also hinted at the franchise’s potential strategies to find a suitable replacement for the star leg-spinner as the supplementary and replacement draft approaches.
“It is upsetting that we have been deprived of Rashid Khan. He is a big name and a match-winner. No one can replace Rashid completely. Efforts will be made to include a good player in the squad in place of Rashid.”
Given Rashid Khan’s indelible mark on the Lahore Qalandars, his absence from PSL 9 poses a significant challenge for the franchise as they aim to secure their third consecutive title. The Nangarhar-born cricketer’s exceptional skills and invaluable experience have shaped the Qalandars’ success in recent seasons. As a result, finding a like-for-like replacement for the Afghan spin wizard will be a crucial task for the team management.
The Qalandars’ quest for an adequate substitute will require meticulous scrutiny of available players in the supplementary and replacement draft, which is set to occur virtually on Monday.
Identifying a player with a skill set, temperament, and experience similar to Rashid Khan’s will be pivotal in ensuring the team’s balance remains intact. Moreover, with the PSL being a high-stakes tournament featuring top-notch international and domestic talent, the franchise’s chosen replacement must be capable of thriving under pressure and contributing effectively in crucial match situations.
As the Qalandars’ management navigates this challenge, fans will undoubtedly keep a close eye on the proceedings, eager to see who will fill Rashid Khan’s void and help lead the team to continued success in the upcoming PSL season.
“When he is ready, he will be the first one to get on the field” – Jonathan Trott on Rashid Khan
Rashid Khan, a talented cricket player from Afghanistan, won’t be able to play in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) this year. He had surgery on his back and is still getting better. However, Rashid is an essential player for his team, Lahore Qalandars, and has helped them win.
His coach, Jonathan Trott, said there’s yet to be an exact date when Rashid can play again.
They want to ensure he is fully healed before he returns so he doesn’t get hurt again. The team must find another player to replace Rashid and help them do well in the tournament.
“It is a case of us making sure that we are really careful with his back. He is such an influential player, we have to make sure he is 100 per cent ready and not rush him back from that type of surgery. It is important to give him the right time and he is working extremely hard and he is here with the team.”
He Added:
“He is very passionate and dedicated to the Afghan national side. When he is ready, he will be the first one to get on the field. He has got a few more appointments and check-ups to make sure everything is okay. So there is no real time frame. I hope it is sooner rather than later. But there is no pressure and no rush.”
