Peshawar Zalmi captain Babar Azam addressed the media following his team’s defeat to Islamabad United in Eliminator 2 of PSL season nine in Karachi.
The 29-year-old expressed frustration, noting that their bowling performance in the latter half of United’s innings was subpar.
“I think we were in a good position after 10 overs. But our bowling after that was very bad. We weren’t up to the mark and we thought we had won the match,” he said.
“We were ahead but after that, we bowled ordinarily,” he added.
Imad Wasim and Haider Ali engineered a crucial 98-run partnership for the sixth wicket after United struggled at 91/5 in their chase of 186.
Imad notched his first half-century of the season, finishing unbeaten on 59 from 40 balls. Meanwhile, Haider delivered a decisive innings of 52 off 29 balls, including five sixes and two fours.
Babar praised the pair, stating, “Credit to Imad and Haider for their outstanding performance.”
United’s chase started disastrously, with three wickets lost in the first four overs and just 21 runs on the board.
In-form opener Martin Guptill briefly turned the tide, notably scoring 22 runs in an over against Saim Ayub, before being dismissed by Khurram Shehzad on the final ball of the powerplay.
Guptill was a key contributor, making 34 runs from 21 balls, including five boundaries and a six.
With the score at 50/4 after six overs, Azam Khan joined forces with Imad Wasim to mount a recovery.
The duo batted judiciously for about five overs until Luke Wood dismissed Azam Khan for 22 on the final ball of the 11th over. Although this setback threatened United’s recovery, Imad Wasim and Haider Ali managed to steer the team to a dramatic victory.
This marks United’s first appearance in a PSL final since 2018. They will face the Multan Sultans on March 18 at the same venue.
Saim Ayub’s explosive 73 and Mohammad Haris’ 40 propelled Zalmi to 185/5.
For United, Naseem Shah led the bowling attack with figures of 3/30 from his four overs, while Shadab Khan and Obed McCoy each added a wicket to the tally.
United will face off against the Multan Sultans in the final on March 18.
