Wicketkeeper-batsman Azam Khan, a key player in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), recently shared that his journey with Islamabad United has been a transformative experience. His reflections on this journey provide valuable insights into the challenges and triumphs of a professional cricketer.
Azam Khan highlighted that his tenure with Islamabad United has been marked by two Pakistan Super League (PSL) victories.
Khan, who previously played for the Quetta Gladiators, joined Islamabad United in 2022. Since then, he has been a key middle-order batsman and wicketkeeper, contributing aggressively to the team’s success.
He said, “PSL is going well. Players are in good form, but I am never satisfied with my performance. I always strive to improve.” Reflecting on cricket’s inherent unpredictability, he noted that setbacks are more common in the sport than triumphs.
He mentioned, “Cricket is a game where success is less and failure is more. A person can score 500 runs in five matches and then get out for zero in the next match.” He emphasized that his focus is always on the present rather than the distant future, concentrating entirely on his performance. He remarked, “I don’t pay much attention to the distant future; I stay focused on the present.” His selection for the national team ultimately rests with the selectors, but he remains focused on enhancing his performance.
He further added, “I try to perform in a way that doesn’t require explanation. I want to be selected based on my current performance, not on my past.” He also discussed the upcoming 2024 T20 World Cup in the United States and the West Indies. He noted that the playing conditions at these new venues will differ significantly from those of previous tournaments.
He said, “Conditions in the West Indies will not be the same as before; the winning score is now 180.” “PSL provides a good platform for players aspiring to play in the World Cup.” The 25-year-old batsman noted that his position in the batting order typically prevents him from reaching a century in T20 cricket, as he usually comes in when only a handful of balls remain.
He acknowledged that achieving a century becomes challenging when he enters the game at a lower position in the batting order.
“I still regret not finishing the match against Zalmi,” Azam Khan said. He praised Arif Yaqoob and Obaid Shah as the best bowlers. “I try to attack the opposition’s best bowler; if I can attack the main bowler, others come under pressure.”
This situation arose during the second phase of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 9, which took place in Karachi.
The heavy rainfall led to the inundation of the stadium’s gates, creating a significant barrier around the entrances and posing a challenge for the management and players alike.
This issue arose during the second phase of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 9, currently underway in Karachi.
Owing to Karachi’s faulty drainage system, rainwater gathered at Gate No. 12 of the stadium. Blocked drains hampered efforts to clear the area, transforming nearby roads into waterlogged ponds.
Efforts to recruit sweepers to clear the drains and address the impact of the rainfall caused significant disruption to traffic, inconveniencing passing vehicles, highlighting the shared challenges faced during such situations.
Despite attempts to address and manage the drainage issues, the heavy rainfall exacerbated the situation, significantly worsening the city’s conditions.
To address the situation, ensure the smooth hosting of upcoming Pakistan Super League (PSL) matches, and manage the impact of the persistent rain, the Sindh government has stationed a rain emergency team in front of the National Stadium, demonstrating their commitment to the event’s success.
It is important to note that the Karachi Kings will face the Multan Sultans at the stadium on March 3. This match marks Shahn Masood’s team’s return to action after defeating the Quetta Gladiators.
