Chennai, May 26, 2024—The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) secured the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 title with a commanding all-round performance, overcoming the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in a thrilling final at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. This victory clinched KKR’s third IPL championship, echoing their landmark triumph at the same iconic venue in 2012. The win solidifies KKR’s position as one of the most successful franchises in IPL history.
In a match characterized by standout bowling and assertive batting, KKR’s bowlers were instrumental in restricting SRH to a modest total of 113 runs. Mitchell Starc was particularly impactful, delivering key breakthroughs and applying sustained pressure throughout SRH’s innings. Regarding the run-chase, Venkatesh Iyer’s explosive batting performance proved decisive, steering KKR to a resounding victory with eight wickets. This dominant display ensured a fitting and memorable conclusion to the 2024 IPL season.
KKR’s bowlers delivered a stellar performance in the IPL 2024 final, expertly restricting the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) to a modest total of 113 runs. Their disciplined and aggressive bowling strategy ensured that SRH never found their rhythm or momentum throughout their innings. The bowlers consistently applied pressure, preventing SRH’s batters from settling in or building partnerships.
In their previous encounter, Mitchell Starc, named Player of the Match, played a pivotal role in dismantling SRH’s batting lineup. His precision and skill were evident as he delivered crucial breakthroughs, making critical inroads and keeping SRH’s scoring rate in check. Starc’s relentless pressure was complemented by the strong support of the KKR bowling unit, including standout performances from Vaibhav Arora, Andre Russell, and Sunil Narine. Together, they created a formidable bowling attack that laid a solid foundation for KKR’s successful run-chase, ultimately proving instrumental in securing their IPL 2024 championship.
The match commenced with SRH winning the toss and choosing to bat, a decision that played into KKR’s preference for bowling first. Mitchell Starc showcased his precision from the outset, dismissing SRH opener Abhishek Sharma with a delivery clipping the off-stump’s top.
Vaibhav Arora soon followed with another crucial breakthrough, removing Travis Head and leaving SRH in a precarious position at six for two. This early collapse set the tone for KKR’s dominant bowling display, significantly hampering SRH’s ability to build substantial innings.
KKR’s bowlers continued their strong performance throughout the innings. Starc returned in the fifth over to dismiss Rahul Tripathi. SRH could only manage a boundary in the third over of the powerplay. The middle overs saw contributions from Andre Russell and Harshit Rana, who took crucial wickets and kept the pressure on SRH. Sunil Narine and Varun Chakaravarthy also played critical roles in economic spells.
Despite a late effort from Pat Cummins, who scored 24 runs and was eventually caught by Starc in the 19th over, SRH finished their innings at 113.
In response, KKR’s chase was brisk and decisive. Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Sunil Narine began strongly, with Narine hitting a six before being caught. Venkatesh Iyer then took charge, hitting two sixes and a four in the second over and continuing his aggressive performance throughout the innings. KKR reached fifty in less than five overs and accelerated past the 100-run mark within nine overs.
Gurbaz was dismissed for 39, but Iyer’s aggressive batting ensured KKR maintained their momentum. Iyer completed his half-century in just 24 balls and scored the winning runs, prompting a jubilant celebration from the KKR squad.
KKR’s victory in the IPL 2024 final underscores their dominance and excellence, marking a historic win at one of the tournament’s most iconic venues.
