The celebrated skipper’s departure from the Indian Premier League (IPL) team has been a topic of interest for fans and followers of the sport. Ponting’s exit comes after a successful stint with the franchise, during which he played a pivotal role in shaping the team’s performance.
In a recent interview, Ponting cited his limited availability as the primary reason for the move. He acknowledged that the Delhi Capitals were seeking a full-time head coach who could dedicate more time and focus to the team’s development and success. While his time with the Capitals has ended, Ponting’s contributions to the franchise will not be forgotten, and the cricketing world eagerly awaits his next venture.
Legendary Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting recently opened up about the reasons behind his departure from Delhi Capitals (DC) and his subsequent appointment as the head coach of Punjab Kings (PBKS) for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Ponting, who served as the head coach of DC for seven seasons from 2018 to 2024, played an instrumental role in leading the team to three consecutive playoff appearances from 2019 to 2021, including their first final in 2020.
In a recent interview, Ponting explained his decision to part ways with DC, citing his limited availability as the primary reason. The former Australian skipper acknowledged that the franchise sought a full-time head coach who could dedicate more time and focus to the team’s development and success. With the mutual understanding that Ponting’s availability would not align with the team’s requirements, his tenure with the Delhi Capitals ended in July 2024.
Despite ending his successful association with DC, Ponting’s passion for the IPL remained strong, leading him to accept the head coach role for PBKS starting from IPL 2025. The Punjab-based franchise finished ninth in the previous season and has had three different coaches in the last four seasons. Ponting’s appointment brings hope and excitement to PBKS fans, who look forward to witnessing his strategic insight and coaching expertise elevate the team’s performance in the upcoming IPL seasons.

“I felt like we created a really good family environment there. As I said, I understand what they want; they said to me that my availability was becoming an issue. And they wanted to pretty much have a full-time head coach. I could not commit to that, so I was disappointed that it ended, but I understand the direction they wanted to head going forward,” Ponting said as quoted by TOI.
Everyone I have been there with has had a great time: Ricky Ponting
Former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting and the Delhi Capitals parted ways because Ponting could not fully commit to the role of head coach. Despite the mutual disappointment surrounding the end of this partnership, Ponting acknowledged the significant impact his tenure with the Delhi Capitals had on the team and his professional development.
During his time with the franchise, Ponting played a pivotal role in elevating the Delhi Capitals’ performance and contributing to their success in the Indian Premier League. Through his strategic guidance and leadership, the team consistently finished in the top four, highlighting the positive influence he had on the players and the squad’s overall performance.
Although Ponting’s time with the Delhi Capitals has ended, his contributions will not be forgotten. His dedication, insight, and expertise have left a lasting impression on the franchise, and both parties will undoubtedly continue to build upon the strong foundation he helped establish. As Ponting embarks on new professional endeavors, the Delhi Capitals will carry forward the lessons learned and continue striving for success in future seasons.
“Everyone that I have been there with, has had a great time. You have only to look at some of the social media posts that Delhi put out straightaway to understand that a lot of the people involved in the franchise were disappointed that I wasn’t continuing as well. But the decisions were made,” he added.
Ricky Ponting, the esteemed former Australian cricket captain, embarked on his accomplished coaching journey in the Indian Premier League (IPL) when he first joined the Kolkata Knight Riders as a player-coach in 2008. His exceptional leadership skills and strategic insights soon caught the attention of the cricketing world, leading him to join the Mumbai Indians, where he transitioned from captain to advisor.
Having significantly impacted the teams he has led, Ponting now embarks on a new challenge as the head coach of the Punjab-based franchise, Punjab Kings. The team has been grappling with a playoff drought since 2014, and Ponting, as their third head coach in four seasons, is tasked with revitalizing the squad and leading them to success.
The Punjab Kings have a strong foundation of talented players and dedicated staff, and with Ponting’s wealth of experience and expertise, the team is poised to make a comeback in the highly competitive IPL arena. As the legendary batter takes the helm, fans eagerly anticipate a new era of growth and accomplishment for the franchise.
“That is the thing that makes coaching inviting to me. I like having that pressure. It is as close to getting back to playing as you can possibly get. From the moment I finished playing, when that competition stops in your life, it is really hard to replace that again. The closest thing I could find to playing was getting back in the cricket team’s changing room being a coach and feeling like you are actually playing again. And coaching against guys that I might have played against and guys that are coaching that I played against–I want to beat them. Simple. A cricket changing room is where I’m supposed to be,” the 49-year-old concluded.
