In the latest development, sources privy to information said MS Dhoni would decide about his retirement only after having surgery in London.
With questions flying thick and fast about his retirement, former India and Chennai Super Kings captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is planning to visit London to treat a muscle tear injury, CSK sources have said. The sources said Dhoni will take a call on his future course of action post-recovery. CSK got eliminated from the Playoffs race of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 after a heart-wrenching defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in a do-or-die match on Saturday.
It will only be the third time the five-time champion won’t feature in the IPL playoffs. The defending champions suffered a 27-run defeat at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, and as soon as M.S. Dhoni walked out of the ground, scoring 25 off 13 deliveries, speculation grew regarding his future.
However, in the latest development, sources privy to information told IANS that Dhoni would decide about his retirement only after having surgery in London.
“Dhoni might head to London for his muscle tear surgery, which saw him struggling during the IPL. He is not fully fit but wants to continue to play cricket. He will only decide about his future after treatment, which will take him five to six months to recover,” sources told IANS.
Chasing 219, CSK faltered in the middle overs after recovering from the sloppy start. Rachin Ravindra’s 61-run and Ravindra Jadeja’s unbeaten 42 failed to guide the defending champion over the line.
Despite finishing the campaign with 14 points, the same as RCB in the league stage, CSK failed to seal the berth due to the latter’s superior net run rate.
With CSK ending their campaign in the IPL, fans and experts speculated that it could be Dhoni’s final season for the franchise. But, still the veteran has kept his cards close to heart and headed back home after the match on Sunday.
There has been much speculation over MS Dhoni’s future in the Indian Premier League (IPL) after the Chennai Super Kings crashed out of IPL 2024.
There has been a lot of speculation over MS Dhoni’s future in the Indian Premier League (IPL) after Chennai Super Kings crashed out of IPL 2024. The five-time champions slumped to a loss against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, which saw their playoff dreams go up in smoke. It was a topsy-turvy season for CSK, and Dhoni mainly operated as a lower-order finisher under the leadership of new captain Ruturaj Gaikwad. While there was no official communication regarding Dhoni’s future, the former India captain was seen taking a bike ride around Ranchi, and the videos have been posted on social media.
Meanwhile, MS Dhoni was at the crease with the game hanging by a thread. The veteran star was not able to finish the match as he was caught in the deep off the bowling of Yash Dayal.
Ex-India batter Aakash Chopra said that if Dhoni had not been beaten, CSK would have won the match.
“MS Dhoni was there along with Ravindra Jadeja. Dhoni kept them alive. Maybe this was the last time we saw Dhoni. He hit the longest six of this season – 110 meters. He also hit two fours on the side of his leg. If MS Dhoni hadn’t gotten out to the back-of-the-hand ball, he would have won the game (taken CSK to the playoffs),” Chopra said in a video uploaded on his YouTube channel.
“From where he started, it didn’t seem like winning the game was possible. Not winning, you know I am talking about 201; winning the match was beyond them. Jadeja was hitting sixes off the first ball of every over. However, Yash Dayal bowled well in the last over. Only 17 runs were required. He saved them, and RCB won with a decent margin and progressed,” he added.
