Indian cricket team’s pace spearhead, Mohammad Shami, has recently resumed bowling as part of his ongoing recovery from an ankle injury. The seasoned fast bowler last took the field during the 2023 ODI World Cup final against Australia on November 19, where India faced a heart-wrenching defeat. Despite the loss, Shami’s performance in the tournament was nothing short of exceptional, as he claimed 24 wickets in just seven matches, boasting an outstanding average of 10.70.
Following the World Cup, Shami has been sidelined due to an ankle injury that not only ruled him out of the IPL 2024 but also the highly anticipated T20 World Cup. To address the issue, Shami underwent surgery in February and has since been diligently working on his rehabilitation. As he gradually recovers, the focus remains on ensuring a safe and steady return to the game. Although eager to rejoin his teammates, Shami prioritizes long-term fitness over a hasty comeback, recognizing that a cautious approach will ultimately benefit both him and the team.
Taking to his official Instagram account, Mohammad Shami shared an uplifting video, much to the delight of his fans. The post featured a clip of the fast bowler in action on a turf pitch, marking a significant milestone in his recovery journey. Alongside the video, Shami shared an optimistic message, expressing his enthusiasm for getting back in the game and thanking his supporters for their unwavering encouragement throughout his rehabilitation process.
“Away from the Ground, but Never Out of the Game, the comeback will be worth watching #shami #mdshami #mdshami11 #comeback.”
Aakash Chopra, a former Indian cricketer and current commentator, recently shared his insights on the Gujarat Titans’ (GT) player retention strategy ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction next year. Chopra emphasized the significance of maintaining a strong bowling lineup and highlighted veteran fast bowler Mohammad Shami as a crucial asset for the team.
According to Chopra, releasing Shami would not be in GT’s best interest, as the experienced pacer still has a couple of solid years left in his career to contribute significantly to the franchise’s success. With his exceptional bowling skills and leadership qualities, Shami could continue to spearhead the team’s bowling department and guide the younger players, ultimately bolstering GT’s overall performance on the field.
Chopra’s analysis sheds light on the importance of considering not just a player’s current form, but also their long-term value and impact on the team’s dynamics. In the case of Shami and the Gujarat Titans, retaining his expertise and experience could prove to be a wise decision in maintaining a competitive edge within the IPL.
Speaking in a video on his YouTube channel, Chopra said:
“I will think whether I can go towards Mohammad Shami. He missed this year because of injury but the only thing that goes against him is that he is not getting younger. It’s a three-year retention, so will you want to retain him? He wasn’t very expensive and it’s enough even if he gives me two years. So Mohammad Shami will be my choice.”
Aakash Chopra also expressed his views on other key players that the Gujarat Titans (GT) should consider retaining ahead of the mega auction. Highlighting the importance of a well-balanced team composition, Chopra earmarked young batting sensations Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan as the franchise’s top two retention picks.
Elaborating on his choices, Chopra mentioned that both Gill and Sudharsan have showcased immense potential and demonstrated impressive performances in their respective roles within the team. As such, their continued presence would not only strengthen the core of GT’s batting lineup but also ensure a stable foundation for the franchise’s future success.
Moreover, Chopra’s recommendation reflects a strategic approach to player retention, taking into account the long-term benefits of investing in promising talent. By securing the services of these rising stars, GT can build a solid and cohesive unit that effectively blends experience with youthful exuberance, ultimately enhancing their prospects in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
“Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan will be my first two retentions. I have to keep them and I feel this team will also want to keep them because Sai Sudharsan is consistent and this team is seeing their future around Shubman Gill, and that is why he was the captain as well this year.”
