“The highest bidder will be given one final opportunity to raise their bid for a player before the team holding the RTM card can exercise their right,” the rule stated.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently announced the rules and regulations for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction. However, the new Right to Match (RTM) clause has led to seven IPL franchises questioning its implications and raising concerns.
According to the updated RTM clause, during the auction, the franchise with the highest bid for a player will be given a chance to increase their bid before the RTM. Furthermore, the increased bid can be of any value, which the RTM-holding team must match if they wish to retain the player.
These changes to the RTM clause have left several IPL teams uncertain and seeking clarification from the BCCI. The teams are concerned about how the new rule might affect their strategies during the auction and the potential impact on team compositions and player salaries. The BCCI, as the governing body responsible for the IPL, is expected to review and address these concerns to ensure a fair and transparent auction process.
Interestingly, every franchise will be able to exercise their RTM rights for a maximum of six players if they have not retained any. “The highest bidder will be given one final opportunity to raise their bid for a player before the team holding the RTM card can exercise their right,” the rule stated.
“For example, if Team 1 holds the RTM for Player X and Team 2 has placed the highest bid of Rs. 6 Cr, then Team 1 will be first asked if they will exercise RTM, if Team 1 agrees, then Team 2 will have the chance to increase their bid. If Team 2 raises their bid to Rs. 9 Cr, then Team 1 can use the RTM and acquire Player X for Rs. 9 Cr. If Team 2 chooses not to raise the bid and keeps it at Rs. 6 Cr, Team 1 can use the RTM and get Player X for Rs. 6 Cr,” the BCCI explained.
According to a recent report by Cricbuzz, several IPL franchises have taken issue with the new Right to Match (RTM) clause introduced by the BCCI for the upcoming IPL 2025 auction. The franchises have collectively expressed their concerns to the BCCI through a formal letter, highlighting the potential negative implications of the revised clause.
The franchises argue that the primary purpose of the RTM cards is to help determine a player’s actual market value during the auction. The concerned teams believe that the RTM-holding team being forced to match an arbitrarily increased bid rather than an incrementally raised one diminishes the value-assessment aspect of the RTM cards.
As the governing body for the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is expected to thoroughly review the franchises’ concerns regarding the new Right to Match (RTM) clause. The BCCI must address these issues and clearly explain how the clause will be implemented during the IPL 2025 auction to maintain transparency and ensure a level playing field for all participating teams.
Addressing these concerns is crucial for maintaining trust between the franchises and the governing body and preserving the IPL’s reputation as one of the world’s premier cricket leagues. Fairness in player acquisition processes is a crucial aspect of the league’s success, and any ambiguity surrounding the RTM clause could potentially jeopardize the balance of competition among the teams.
The franchises eagerly await theBCCI’s response and hope their concerns will be taken into account to maintain the high standards of integrity and fairness that have made the IPL a global phenomenon in cricket. By fostering open communication and addressing these issues head-on, the BCCI can ensure that the IPL continues to thrive and provide unparalleled entertainment for cricket fans worldwide.
