The incident happened on the first ball of the 14th over when Cameron Green inflicted the run out after a bullet throw by Virat Kohli from deep midwicket.
Former Mumbai Indians pacer Mitchell McClenaghan questioned the runout dismissal of Rajasthan Royals (RR) batter Dhruv Jurel during the IPL 2024 Eliminator against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on Wednesday. The incident happened on the first ball of the 14th over when Cameron Green inflicted the run out after a bullet throw by Virat Kohli from deep midwicket. It was a crucial moment in the game as Jurel’s dismissal momentarily tilted it in favor of RCB. The third umpire decided before finally giving Jurel his marching orders.
While Kohli and Green were praised by the fans and commentators, McClenaghan questioned the decision made by the third umpire, questioning if the laws of the game have changed.
“Always thought you had to have the ball held in your hand to cause a runout… have the rules changed?,” McClenaghan wrote in a post on X.
McClenaghan backed his claim by sharing a screenshot of the rule book.
“The wicket is broken fairly if a bail is completely removed from the top of the stumps, or a stump is struck out of the ground by a fielder with his hand or arm, providing that the ball is held in the hand or hands so used, or in the hand of the arm so used,” the rule stated.
Jurel’s dismissal, however, turned out to be a minor hiccup in RR’s chase as Riyan Parag, Shimron Hetmyer, and Rovman Powell played handy cameos to steer them home.
The win saw RR help them reach Qualifier 2 and knock RCB out of the tournament.
RR will take on SRH on Friday for a place in the final against Kolkata Knight Riders.
While Virat Kohli is highly likely to take home the Orange Cap, an IPL trophy remains elusive for the former RCB captain.
Star batter Virat Kohli was visibly dejected after the Royal Challengers Bengaluru crashed out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) following the defeat to Rajasthan Royals in the Eliminator on Wednesday. RCB’s six-game winning run was abruptly halted in Ahmedabad, with the franchise once again missing out on the chance to lift the title. Kohli had a stellar season with the bat, scoring 741 runs in 15 matches. While it is highly likely that Kohli will take home the Orange Cap, an IPL trophy remains elusive for the former RCB captain.
After Rovman Powell hit the winning boundary for RR, a dejected Kohli was seen knocking off the bails, repeating his actions after the heartbreaking loss in the ODI World Cup final to Australia at the same venue.
On Wednesday, Kohli scripted history as the first player to score 8000 runs in the IPL.
To surpass the 8000-run mark, Kohli needed just 29 runs, and he achieved it with his trademark grace and accuracy. Yuzvendra Chahal removed Kohli after he had scored 33 runs off 24 balls, including three boundaries and a six. His nearest rival, Shikhar Dhawan, trails at 6,769 runs.
So far in the tournament, Kohli has amassed 741 runs in 15 games for RCB. With an average of 64 and a strike rate 155 this season, he scored one century and five half-centuries.
Regarding the Eliminator clash, Rajasthan Royals ended their four-match winless run in the Indian Premier League. They bounced back at the right moment to seal their place in the Qualifier 2.
Meanwhile, Kohli is set to leave for New York in the coming days to prepare for the T20 World Cup.
He has been named in the 15-man squad, which will be led by Rohit Sharma.
India is scheduled to play Ireland in their tournament opener on June 5.
