Renowned cricket commentator and former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has expressed his belief that Virat Kohli will be Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) top priority during the IPL 2025 retentions. Chopra’s conviction is based on Kohli’s exceptional track record and deep-rooted association with the franchise, making him an irreplaceable asset for the team.
Chopra speculates that Kohli might be open to taking on the captaincy role again, further emphasizing his significance within the RCB squad for the 2025 season. This prediction aligns with Kohli’s previous tenure as captain, during which he showcased his leadership skills and unwavering dedication to the team’s success.
Moreover, Chopra’s assertion that RCB will prioritize Kohli during the retention reflects the franchise’s long-term strategy of building a solid core team around critical players. With Kohli’s proven track record and continued commitment to the team, it is evident that RCB sees him as a pivotal figure in their pursuit of IPL glory in the upcoming seasons.
Former Indian cricketer and well-known commentator Aakash Chopra recently shared his insights on Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) potential retention choices ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega-auction. Chopra expressed confidence that RCB’s star batter Virat Kohli would undeniably be the franchise’s first retention, owing to his stellar performances and long-standing association with the team.
However, Chopra voiced uncertainty regarding retaining former South African skipper Faf du Plessis, who has led RCB for the past three seasons. Citing du Plessis’ age, Chopra speculated that the 40-year-old might not continue for another IPL cycle, which is expected to span three years. Instead, he advocated for RCB to retain the talented Australian all-rounder Cameron Green, who has showcased impressive performances for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2023 and RCB in 2024. Chopra also highlighted the significance of retaining Indian pacer Mohammed Siraj, emphasizing the challenges of acquiring top-tier Indian fast bowlers in the IPL auction.
Ultimately, RCB’s retention strategy will be influenced by many factors, including player performance, team balance, and the franchise’s long-term vision.
“This is always a very interesting question. Tough question again as to who would you want to retain. Virat Kohli will be one you will retain. Can you retain Faf for three years? That is a big question. Do you want to retain Faf for three years? Not sure,” Chopra said in a video released on his YouTube channel.
“If I get a chance I will retain Cameron Green. I will retain Mohammed Siraj because I won’t get too many Indian fast bowlers in the auction if I let him go as part of the retention,” the 46-year-old elaborated.
I would release Glenn Maxwell: Chopra.
Chopra recently suggested that while Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) should consider retaining Rajat Patidar at an affordable price, they should contemplate parting ways with Glenn Maxwell for the upcoming season. This opinion comes as Maxwell’s performance in IPL 2025 saw him scoring a mere 52 runs in 10 matches, even leading to being dropped from the playing XI. However, it’s important to note that Maxwell’s abilities in the T20 format are undeniable.
Known for his unconventional shots and improvisation, Maxwell has had numerous notable achievements throughout his career, including a strong T20I record, domestic successes, and an impressive IPL performance in the past. His adaptability and experience in the shortest format make him a valuable asset, even if his recent performance has been less than stellar.
With this in mind, Chopra’s suggestion to release Maxwell could be a strategic move to make room for new talent and re-evaluate the team’s overall composition.
“Rajat Patidar maybe, if he can be retained slightly cheap, but that’s about it. Too many names aren’t there. I will release Maxi. I will say it’s enough, that you are a very good player, you play very well, but it’s okay. I want to look somewhere else. So I might leave Maxi,” he said.
