New Zealand has bolstered its squad with two significant additions in preparation for the upcoming three Test matches in Asia later this month. These strategic inclusions are expected to enhance the team’s performance and strengthen their chances as they face the challenges of playing in the subcontinent conditions. The additions come as part of New Zealand’s efforts to optimize their lineup and address specific needs for the series.
New Zealand’s coaching staff has been strengthened with new appointments as they prepare for their upcoming one-off Test against Afghanistan and the ICC World Test Championship series against Sri Lanka. This enhancement to their coaching team is expected to provide additional expertise and support, which are crucial for navigating the challenges of these important matches. The added experience and fresh perspectives are anticipated to contribute positively to the team’s preparation and strategy for both the Test match and the series, aiming to elevate their performance on the international stage.
Former Sri Lanka spinner Rangana Herath has been appointed as the bowling coach for New Zealand for their upcoming series, which includes all three Test matches. Herath, a distinguished Test cricketer known for his impressive career tally of 433 Test wickets, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the Kiwis’ coaching team. He steps in to replace Saqlain Mushtaq, who has departed to take on a new role with the Pakistan Cricket Board. Herath’s addition is expected to provide valuable insights and guidance to New Zealand’s bowlers as they prepare for the challenges ahead in the series.
Former India batting coach Vikram Rathour, known for his distinguished playing career with six Test matches and as a trusted assistant to Rahul Dravid during Dravid’s tenure as India coach, has joined the New Zealand team. Rathour’s appointment is expected to provide valuable insights and strategic guidance to the Kiwi players. His experience and deep understanding of the game will be particularly beneficial as New Zealand gears up for their Test match against Afghanistan in Noida. Rathour’s expertise is anticipated to help the team adapt to the conditions and challenges they will face in the upcoming series.
New Zealand coach Gary Stead was excited about adding the experienced duo to his coaching staff. He emphasized how Rangana Herath and Vikram Rathour bring significant expertise and insight to the team, which will be crucial for their preparations for the upcoming series. Stead is confident that Herath’s extensive spin bowling experience and Rathour’s knowledge from his time with the Indian team will significantly enhance the coaching setup. He believes their contributions will be instrumental in navigating the challenges of the Test matches against Afghanistan and Sri Lanka.
“We’re really excited to introduce Rangana and Vikram into our Test group,” he mentioned.
“Both men are held in high regard in the world of cricket and I know our players are really looking forward to the opportunity to learn from them.”
“For our three left-arm orthodox spinners in particular, Ajaz (Patel), Mitch (Santner) , and Rachin (Ravindra) having the chance to work with Rangana across three Tests on the sub-continent will be hugely beneficial.”
“Rangana has taken over 100 Test wickets in Galle which is the venue of our two Tests against Sri Lanka and so his knowledge of that venue will be priceless.”
The one-off Test against Afghanistan begins on Monday, followed by the two-Test series against Sri Lanka, which starts on September 18.
New Zealand Test squad: Tim Southee (captain), Tom Blundell (wicketkeeper), Michael Bracewell, Devon Conway, Matt Henry, Tom Latham (vice-captain), Daryl Mitchell, Will O’Rourke, Ajaz Patel, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Mitchell Santner, Ben Sears, Kane Williamson, Will Young.
