Klaasen made his Test debut against India in Ranchi in 2019 and last played against the West Indies in 2023. Although his Test career was brief, the talented keeper-batter scored 104 runs at an average of 13 from his four games, with a highest score of 35 against Australia in Sydney. 

Despite his retirement from the most extended format of the game, Klaasen will remain available for selection in white-ball cricket, where he has found considerable success and significantly impacted the South African side.

“It has been a great journey and I am glad I could have represented my country. My baggy Test cap is the most precious cap I have ever been handed.”

This announcement marks the second significant retirement in the South African camp, following opener Dean Elgar’s recent decision to step away from international cricket. Elgar’s retirement came after completing the two-game Test series against India, ending his 12-year career with the departure of two key players; the South African team is now transitioning as they seek to fill the void left by these seasoned veterans and build a new chapter in their cricketing journey.
