The impressive shortlist for the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for December 2023 includes a stellar fast bowler-captain, an exceptional spinner, and a versatile all-rounder. Each nominee has showcased extraordinary talent and skill, making the competition for this prestigious award thrilling and intense.
Australian skipper Pat Cummins had an exceptional 2023, leading his team to victory in the ICC World Test Championship and ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup and retaining the Ashes. In a fitting culmination to the year, Cummins delivered a stellar performance in December as captain and bowler.
In the Test series against Pakistan, Cummins started strong, claiming three wickets in the opening match and guiding Australia to a win. However, he truly shone during the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Defending a total of 317 in the final innings, Australia found themselves in a tense situation, with Pakistan cruising at 110/2.
Cummins’ crucial decision to bring himself back into the attack proved fruitful. He dismissed Pakistani skipper Shan Masood for 60, shifting the momentum back in Australia’s favor.
Cummins dismantled the Pakistani batting order, taking a five-wicket haul in each inning (5/48 & 5/49), reaching the milestone of 250 Test wickets, and earning the Player of the Match award. This outstanding performance ultimately secured Australia a series win. It propelled them to reclaim the No.1 spot in Test rankings, highlighting Cummins’ impact as a player and leader.
The arrival of New Zealand in Bangladesh marked the beginning of a historic Test series, with the home team determined to challenge the visitors’ untarnished record. Leading the charge for Bangladesh was Taijul Islam, whose left-arm spin would ultimately make all the difference.
The first Test saw both sides demonstrating their strength, with Mahmudul Hasan Joy’s impressive 86 for Bangladesh matched by Kane Williamson’s commanding century for New Zealand. The battle continued as Taijul 4/109 negated Glenn Phillips’ four-for in the first innings. Najmul Hossain Shanto’s exceptional performance led Bangladesh to set an imposing target of 338 runs for New Zealand in the final innings. In a scintillating display, Taijul captured 6/75, guiding Bangladesh to a memorable 150-run victory.
Taijul’s exceptional performance against New Zealand persisted into the second Test, and despite Bangladesh losing the contest, he added five more wickets to his tally. The series concluded with numerous accolades for Taijul, who not only spearheaded his team to a historic home win against New Zealand but also earned the Player of the Recognized for his outstanding performance, our protagonist claimed the prestigious Player of the Series award. His remarkable achievement of securing 15 wickets throughout the series not only contributed to his team’s success but also showcased his exceptional bowling skills and strategic prowess.
Glenn Phillips, widely recognized for his dynamic batting prowess and adept wicketkeeping, showcased his strength as a spinner during the Test series against Bangladesh. His multifaceted talents proved to be a valuable asset for the New Zealand team.
In the first Test, Phillips captured five wickets and contributed a valuable knock of 42 off 62 balls. Despite the Black Caps’ defeat in the opening match, Phillips demonstrated his unwavering determination and commitment to the team’s cause.
As the series progressed to the second Test in Mirpur, Phillips delivered an exceptional performance. His 3/31 in the first innings helped restrict Bangladesh to a modest 172. As New Zealand’s cricket team found themselves trailing by 46 runs, they encountered a daunting challenge, having already lost half of their side. Phillips rose to the occasion with a brilliant 87 off just 72 balls, forging a much-needed partnership to bring New Zealand level with Bangladesh.
Chasing a target of 137, the visitors found themselves in another precarious position, losing six wickets for 69. Phillips again displayed his maturity and skill, playing a match-winning knock of 40\* in tandem with Mitchell Santner (35\*).
Phillips’ remarkable all-round performance earned him the well-deserved Player of the Match award, as he concluded the series as New Zealand’s top run-scorer with an impressive 181 runs at an average of 60.33.
