Green Moves Towards Top 20 in ICC Men’s Test Batting Rankings – Cricket World Cup

Promising Australian all-rounder Cameron Green has made a significant leap towards the top 20 in the ICC Men’s Test Batting Rankings following his remarkable performance in the first Test against New Zealand. Green’s unbeaten century played a pivotal role in Australia’s 172-run victory over the Kiwis as part of their ongoing ICC World Test Championship series.

Green’s outstanding achievement has been rewarded with a 22-place rank jump, propelling him to the 23rd position. Although some of his compatriots, such as Steve Smith, Travis Head, and Marnus Labuschagne, have experienced a decline in their rankings, Green’s upward trajectory is an encouraging sign for the Australian team.

Notably, Smith, after scoring 31 and zero, has dropped a position to third, marking the first time he has fallen below 800 rating points since 2014. Labuschagne, on the other hand, finds himself out of the top 10 for the first time since December 2019, having managed only three runs in the match. Head, too, has slipped one slot, allowing Indian batters Virat Kohli, Yashaswi Jaiswal, and Rohit Sharma to gain ground in the rankings.

Green’s ascent in the rankings can be attributed to his impressive knock of 174 not out in the first innings, which earned him the Player of the Match award and demonstrated his immense potential as a batter. As Australia continues to navigate the challenges of Test cricket, Green’s development and growing contribution to the team’s success will undoubtedly be invaluable in their quest for dominance in the sport’s most demanding format.

Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon’s outstanding 10-wicket match haul in the first Test against New Zealand has significantly impacted the ICC Men’s Test Bowling Rankings. This was the first 10-wicket match haul by a spinner in New Zealand since Daniel Vettori’s performance in 2006. As a result, Lyon has risen to sixth position, with his rating points nearing his career-best of 797, which he achieved last year at Edgbaston before suffering an Ashes series-ending injury.

All-rounder Glenn Phillips has made the most significant leap, climbing from 70th to 52nd in the batting rankings and from 67th to 48th among bowlers. He has also risen 12 places to 11th in the all-rounders’ rankings.

Matt Henry has entered the top 20 for the first time after taking eight wickets in the match. At the same time, Rachin Ravindra and William O’Rourke have also improved their positions in the batting and bowling rankings, respectively.

The latest update to the men’s rankings also considers the performances in the one-off Test between Afghanistan and Ireland in Abu Dhabi. Ireland’s Mark Adair has gained 30 positions to reach 69th place in the bowling rankings after securing an eight-wicket match haul that contributed to his team’s historic first Test victory. Andy Balbirnie, Curtis Campher, Paul Stirling, and Andy McBrine have also advanced within the top 100 of the batting rankings.

In the latest ICC Men’s Test Ranking update, Afghanistan’s Hashmatullah Shahidi has demonstrated notable progress, climbing five places to secure the 81st position in the batting rankings. This upward movement is a testament to his growing prowess as a batsman on the international stage and his potential for further development.

Simultaneously, Naveed Zadran has experienced an even more substantial leap in the bowling rankings, soaring 32 positions to the 79th spot. Zadran’s impressive surge underscores his increasing effectiveness as a bowler in the Test arena, as well as his contributions to Afghanistan’s evolving bowling attack.

As Shahidi and Zadran continue to refine their skills and gain experience in the Test format, their individual growth can significantly bolster Afghanistan’s overall performance. These positive strides in the rankings highlight the players’ dedication and hard work and signify a promising trajectory for Afghanistan’s progress in the cricketing world.
