Indian pacer Akash Deep shared his thoughts on his memorable debut, reflecting on his exceptional performance during the opening day of the fourth Test against England in Ranchi. Speaking at a press conference, Deep expressed his delight in achieving his long-awaited dream of representing India on the international stage, a moment made all the more poignant by losing his father and brother.
Akash Deep’s emotional dedication to his impressive three-wicket burst to his late father showcased the personal significance of his success and his unwavering determination. With a remarkable display of skill, Deep immediately impacted the game, stepping up to fill the void left by the absence of veteran bowler Jasprit Bumrah. As he continues to build on this early success, fans and experts eagerly anticipate the promising career ahead for this rising star in cricket.
In a display of sheer prowess and tenacity, debutant Indian fast bowler Akash Deep orchestrated an unforgettable opening day of the fourth Test against England in Ranchi. Within his initial 35 deliveries, Deep delivered a masterclass in bowling, dismantling the England top order and reducing them from a commanding 47 runs at a nearly five-run rate to a reeling position in the contest.
As the day drew to a close, Deep’s remarkable figures of 3 for 70 in 17 overs showcased his undeniable talent and expertise. His triple strike, which featured the critical dismissals of England’s most potent openers, marked a pivotal moment in the match, re-energizing the Indian side and setting the stage for a thrilling contest.
Reflecting on his outstanding performance in the post-match press conference, Akash Deep credited his adherence to a well-honed process for his sensational debut. The Bengal-based bowler highlighted the importance of maintaining discipline and executing his strategies with unwavering focus, which allowed him to consistently challenge the opposition and claim crucial breakthroughs. With this level of dedication and determination, the future looks incredibly bright for this rising star as he continues to make waves in the cricket world.

“When I started to bowl, I wasn’t thinking about a five-wicket haul or a three-wicket haul,” Deep said. “I wanted to follow my process, to bowl to my strengths. I kept bowling in good areas and that yielded me wickets. As a fast bowler, it becomes easier when we focus on bowling in good areas.”
Despite experiencing an early setback in his debut Test against England, Indian pacer Akash Deep showcased remarkable resilience and determination in his bowling performance. In the fourth over of the first innings, Deep had the chance to claim the crucial wicket of Zak Crawley after clean-bowling him with a brilliant delivery. However, his celebration was short-lived as the umpire declared it a no-ball, allowing Crawley to continue his innings.
Undeterred by the missed opportunity, Deep refused to let the disappointment affect his focus. He maintained his composure and continued to execute his bowling strategy with precision, ultimately dismissing Crawley in the same spell. Deep’s ability to bounce back from the initial setback demonstrated his mental fortitude and commitment to his craft, setting the stage for a memorable debut performance. As the match progressed, the young fast bowler claimed three wickets, with figures of 3 for 70 in 17 overs, leaving a lasting impression on cricket fans and experts alike.
“I didn’t feel too bad because I knew even if I didn’t get his wicket, one of our teammates will. But when he hit Siraj for three boundaries and a six in the next over, I felt bad because I felt that I had let my team down.
“He is a good batter and scores quickly, hence I was tense. So it was good that I had his wicket soon.”
Following Akash Deep’s fiery opening spell in the fourth Test against England, the Indian spinners provided valuable support, allowing the hosts to dismantle half of the English batting lineup in the first session. With Deep’s incisive fast bowling and the spinners’ crafty variations, the Indian bowling unit showcased a united front, setting the stage for an enthralling contest.
However, a resilient century from England’s Joe Root steered the visitors to a competitive first-day total of 302/7. Root’s masterful knock not only negated the early damage inflicted by the Indian bowlers but also underscored his prowess as a world-class batsman.
Reflecting on the day’s play, debutant pacer Akash Deep pointed out that the pitch conditions changed significantly as the day progressed. He observed that the surface became drier, making it easier for the batters to score runs as the ball lost its shine. As a result, the Indian team adopted a more defensive bowling strategy to contain the English batters during the latter part of the day. Deep’s astute assessment of the pitch conditions demonstrated his tactical insight and understanding of the game, reflecting the maturity of this promising young talent.
“This is a wicket that remains slow. Because the ball was new and hard initially, it helped quite a bit as a fast bowler, but after Lunch the ball became old and wicket became dried.
“It didn’t have the pace, so there were a number of inside edges but the batters managed to get away with it.
“So in these circumstances, we couldn’t have gone for wickets. Our strategy was to contain runs, and if a side like England, who have a different formula of cricket, if they’ve batted out the entire 90 overs and scored 300 runs then it’s because we bowled in good areas.”
