In a significant development for Afghanistan cricket, the Afghanistan Cricket Board has confirmed two all-format series against Sri Lanka and Ireland. The team will embark on an away tour to Sri Lanka, followed by a series against Ireland in the UAE. Both series will feature Test matches, One Day Internationals, and T20 Internationals, substantially boosting Afghanistan’s international cricket exposure.
The highly anticipated Sri Lanka tour commences with Afghanistan’s inaugural Test match against the hosts, scheduled to take place on February 2 at the esteemed Sinhalese Sports Club Cricket Ground. Following this historic encounter, the two sides will compete in a three-match ODI series and a three-match T20I series.
Subsequently, Afghanistan will host Ireland in the UAE for another all-format series, comprising a Test match, three ODIs, and three T20Is. These competitive engagements serve as crucial preparation for the Afghanistan team ahead of June’s highly anticipated T20 World Cup.
Afghanistan’s men’s cricket team is scheduled for an action-packed series of matches against Sri Lanka and Ireland across all formats. The team will first travel to Sri Lanka for a one-off Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club Cricket Ground, commencing on February 2. Following the historic Test match, the two cricketing giants will engage in a riveting three-match One Day International (ODI) series, set to commence on February 9. This series promises to deliver intense competition, as both teams showcase their prowess in the 50-over format.
The ODI series will be hosted at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo. At the same time, the T20Is will be held in Dambulla. Subsequently, Afghanistan will move to the UAE to host Ireland for a Test match, three ODIs, and three T20Is from February 28 to March 18. The Test match will be at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi. Concurrently, an exhilarating white-ball series is set to take place in Sharjah, featuring three One Day Internationals (ODIs) scheduled for March 7, 9, and 12, followed by a three-match T20 International (T20I) series commencing on March 15.
Afghanistan Cricket Board CEO Naseeb Khan believes that these two series and the upcoming away tour to India will strengthen the team’s preparations for the future, including the highly anticipated The highly anticipated T20 World Cup is set to make its mark on the cricketing world in June. As Afghanistan continues to showcase its cricketing prowess on the global stage, fans can expect exciting and competitive matches in the coming months.
“The year 2024 is a very busy and full of high-voltage competitions for the Afghanistan national team”, Naseeb began.
“The upcoming tours of India, Sri Lanka, and then the home series against Ireland will help us to prepare the team for the much-important T20 World Cup. (We’re) eagerly looking forward to the multiple series.”
Afghanistan’s T20I tour of India meanwhile begins on January 11 in Mohali.
