During the Melbourne Stars’ chase against the Renegades, Australian commentator Jason Richardson was left stunned when a fan interview turned into a live proposal during the Big Bash League 2023-24 match on Tuesday, January 2. As the couple was Indian, the moment quickly went viral.

Cricket stadiums have become popular spots for love proposals, and they are increasingly becoming a common sight. It’s a fun experience for broadcasters and fans in the stands, especially those near the couple. This trend began three years ago when an Indian-origin man proposed to his Australian girlfriend at the SCG during a match between India and Australia. Fast forward to today, and in the same country, but this time in Melbourne, another Indian man got down on one knee to propose to his girlfriend.
The proposal took place during the second innings of the Melbourne derby on Tuesday, January 2, while the Stars were chasing a modest target against the Renegades in a rain-affected game. Channel 7 commentator Jason Richardson was in the stands interviewing a couple supporting opposing teams. Richardson asked if their differing allegiances—one rooting for the Stars, the other for the Renegades—caused friction in their relationship. The man laughed it off, mentioning they were both Glenn Maxwell fans, which brought them closer.
Surprisingly, the man pulled out a ring mid-interview, leaving Richardson shocked. Although it appeared spontaneous to the woman, it seemed planned. She quickly said yes, and the crowd erupted in cheers, with Richardson joining the celebrations.
After the proposal, the couple posed for a picture with Stars captain Glenn Maxwell, whose team has been on a winning streak after a shaky start with three consecutive losses. The Stars have now won four matches in a row and sit in third place on the points table, while the Renegades suffered their fifth loss and remain at the bottom, having only one victory in seven matches.

Brett Lee and Nikhil Chaudhary shared a lively conversation in Hindi over the mic during BBL 13
During the current Big Bash League (BBL), Australian cricketer Nikhil Chaudhary, who was born in Delhi, has gained immense popularity, particularly in India. After playing for India’s Under-19 team and Punjab, Chaudhary moved to Australia in 2019 to further his cricket career. His contract with the Hobart Hurricanes in BBL 13 has been the most significant milestone in his journey toward fulfilling his cricketing dreams.
Chaudhary has made a mark in the BBL not only with his batting and bowling but also with his signature Punjabi style and swagger. During the match between the Hurricanes and Melbourne Renegades, Chaudhary was on the player mic when commentator and former Australian cricketer Brett Lee, who has spent considerable time in India during the IPL and with Star Sports as an expert, surprised him by striking up a conversation in Hindi.
Here’s how the conversation went:
Lee: Hi Nikhil, Brett Lee here! Aap kaise ho? (How are you?)
Nikhil: Main thik hoon (I am fine, Thanks.)
Lee: My Hindi thoda thoda, aapse milke khushi hui (I know only a bit of Hindi but it’s nice to meet you.)
Nikhil: Dhanyawad (Thank You). Your Hindi is too good mate.
Lee: Na, I’m still trying mate!
Nikhil Chaudhary didn’t get a chance to bat during the match at Marvel Stadium on Thursday, January 4. Still, he made an impact with the ball by taking the crucial wicket of Quinton de Kock. The Hurricanes secured their third win, staying in contention for a top-four finish by successfully chasing down 148 runs, thanks to Sam Hain’s quickfire half-century. In the meantime, the Renegades dropped their sixth match. With four matches remaining, the Hurricanes must win at least three to stay in the hunt for a top-four spot. After five victories in seven games, the Brisbane Heat are atop the standings.
