According to Fortune India, Virat Kohli paid a staggering ₹66 crore in taxes last financial year, the highest by any Indian sportsperson.
Former Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli topped the list of highest-taxpaying sportspersons in the country for the financial year 2023-24, as per Fortune India. Kohli, a leading sports icon, paid ₹66 crore in taxes—roughly three times the price of IPL’s costliest player, Mitchell Starc, who was sold for ₹24.75 crore.
He ranked fifth among celebrity taxpayers, behind actors Shah Rukh Khan (₹92 crore), Vijay (₹80 crore), Salman Khan (₹75 crore), and Amitabh Bachchan (₹71 crore).
Kohli, currently on a break after the ODI series against Sri Lanka last month, significantly outpaced other sports figures on India’s list of top celebrity taxpayers.
The next highest-ranking sportsperson is the legendary MS Dhoni, who paid ₹38 crore in the last financial year, securing the seventh spot. Even though Dhoni will not play for India in the 2020 World Cup, he remains one of India’s highest-earning athletes. He currently plays exclusively in the IPL for the Chennai Super Kings. His participation in the upcoming season, however, remains uncertain.
After Kohli and Dhoni, Sachin Tendulkar is the only Indian sportsperson among the top 10 highest taxpayers. The legendary cricketer, renowned for holding records for the most runs in ODIs and Tests, the most centuries in both formats, and being the only player to have competed in 200 Test matches, paid ₹28 crores in taxes for FY24.
Former India captain and ex-BCCI president Sourav Ganguly ranks 12th on the list, having paid ₹23 crore in taxes.
Current Indian stars Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant are also on the list. All-rounder Hardik Pandya paid ₹13 crore, while wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, aiming for a Test comeback after a lengthy injury hiatus, paid ₹10 crore.
