Before the 2024 Bangladesh Premier League final, the teams Fortune Barishal and Comilla Victorians came together in a solemn moment of silence to pay tribute to the victims of a devastating fire that ravaged Dhaka. The tragic incident occurred on February 29 at the Green Cozy Cottage Shopping Mall on Bailey Road, where a fierce blaze engulfed the shopping complex, leading to a significant and heartbreaking loss of life. By March 1, it was reported that at least 46 people had tragically lost their lives, while many others were left injured or displaced. The incident left the entire community in mourning, bringing to light the urgent need for enhanced safety protocols and more effective emergency response measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.

This act of remembrance by the two teams underscored their profound solidarity with the victims, their families, and all those affected by this tragedy. By pausing to honor the memory of those who perished and to acknowledge the suffering of the survivors, the players and officials expressed their collective grief and support. Their tribute also served as a reminder of the shared responsibility to ensure that such incidents are not repeated, highlighting the sports community’s role in raising awareness and advocating for meaningful change during national sorrow.

In a press release, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) expressed profound sadness and sympathy for the families impacted by the recent tragedy. They conveyed their heartfelt condolences to those who have lost loved ones in this devastating event and offered their support to the grieving families during this difficult time. Additionally, the BCB extended its best wishes for the swift and complete recovery of individuals who sustained injuries or burns due to the incident. Their message underscored the collective sorrow and solidarity of the cricketing community with those affected by this heartbreaking situation.

“The BCB mourns in the wake of this devastating event. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost their loved ones in this unfathomable tragedy. We extend sincere wishes for a speedy recovery to those who sustained injuries and burns in the fire. We hope for their swift recovery and restoration to full health. Our thoughts are also with the medical personnel and emergency responders who are tirelessly working to provide care and support to the survivors,” The press release stated.

Barishal skipper Tamim Iqbal paid his respects and urged changes to prevent such incidents.

“Prayers for the departed souls at the Baily Road incident. We should change, or it will never change!” Tamim posted on his Facebook account.

In the highly anticipated final of the competition, Barishal won the toss and opted to bowl first, setting the stage for an intense battle at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium. Their decision quickly paid off as bowlers James Fuller and Kyle Mayers delivered exceptional performances, putting Comilla under immense pressure. They dismantled Comilla’s top order with sharp, disciplined bowling, leaving them at 79/5, a precarious position in such a high-stakes match.

However, when it seemed Comilla might collapse, Mahidul Islam Ankon and Jaker Ali stepped up to the challenge. Showing remarkable composure under pressure, the duo crafted a resilient partnership, steadily rebuilding their team’s innings. Their determined effort stabilized Comilla’s innings and helped the team cross the critical 100-run milestone, keeping them in the contest. This partnership injected a new sense of hope and momentum into the match, setting the stage for an exciting finish.

Despite this, Barishal remains confident in its ability to finish the job. It’s delivered an impressive performance with the ball. If its batters can contribute effectively, Barishal is well-positioned to claim the title in the 10th edition of the competition.
