Renowned for his captivating leg-spin and dynamic personality, the late Shane Warne had an exceptional ability to read both the game and his opponents.
Known for his mesmerizing leg-spin and larger-than-life personality, the late Shane Warne had an extraordinary ability to read both the game and his opponents. In a 2011 Big Bash League (BBL) game, he skillfully predicted and carried out Brendon McCullum’s dismissal, shocking spectators and commentators with his accuracy.
In this match, the Melbourne Stars, under Warne’s captaincy, faced the Brisbane Heat in Brisbane. As Warne prepared to bowl to McCullum in the 10th over, he engaged with commentators through a microphone, offering insights into his strategy.
When asked about his plans for McCullum, Warne said, “Maybe he’ll try to shape a sweep after that first one or maybe go inside out again a bit harder. So, wanna try and slide one in there, fast.” Warne had predicted the future, reading McCullum’s intentions.
On that very delivery, McCullum attempted a sweep shot. Still, Warne’s delivery was a faster, flatter slider, pitched around the middle and leg stump. The ball sharply spun back, outsmarting McCullum’s bat and crashing into the off stump.
McCullum, who had been in impressive form, was dismissed after scoring 36 off 25 balls. This dismissal was pivotal in the match, showcasing Warne’s exceptional skill. Even though Michael Neser (30 off 21) and Ryan Harris (25 off 20) played with determination, the Brisbane Heat were unable to reach their target of 178, as their innings ended at 169-7.

“We had a significant increase in our audiences globally this year, particularly in India off the back of our new media rights deal, in India, which has shown significant growth in the viewership,” Dobson said.
To engage the expanding Indian audience, the Big Bash League (BBL) and Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) are infusing more Indian elements into their tournaments. Alistair Dobson, General Manager of the Big Bash Leagues, recently noted a significant rise in viewership from India, attributed to a new media rights deal that has broadened the league’s presence in the subcontinent.
The rising interest from Indian fans has been remarkable, positioning India as a crucial BBL and WBBL market. Last season, the strategic inclusion of Indian cricket commentators such as Ravi Shastri and Harsha Bhogle was a deliberate effort to connect more effectively with Indian audiences.
“It was amazing to have those guys commentating the BBL. They bring such expertise and interest to our game and they, from all reports, they really loved what they saw. And we’re hoping to see a few global commentators out here again this summer and obviously with a big international summer ahead,” Dobson mentioned.
Dobson also discussed the potential for featuring more Indian talent in the leagues.
“We’re very fortunate in the WBBL that Indian players of, you know, whether that’s Harmanpreet Kaur for the (Melbourne) Renegades or others that have been in our competition and had such skill and capability and leadership.”
“So we’re always working closely with other boards around the world about how we can grow our competition and make it as accessible as possible and that won’t stop,” Dobson said
Over time, the BBL and WBBL have seen global stars significantly impact these renowned Australian T20 leagues.
