Scorchers Make Yet Another BBL Final: A Year to Remember

Another year

The Perth Scorchers have secured their spot in an eighth Big Bash League final, overpowering the Sydney Sixers in Saturday night’s Qualifier at Optus Stadium.

Despite Steve Smith’s strong form for the Sixers, many expected Sydney to give their long-time rivals a tough challenge, especially after their narrow six-run victory over Perth on January 15.

However, the Scorchers, led by captain Ashton Turner and opener Cam Bancroft, quickly chased down the 152-run target, winning by seven wickets with nine balls to spare.

The victory wasn’t always assured, though

In front of a lively 40,000-strong crowd at The Furnace, the Sixers opted to bat first after winning the bat flip. Their innings started to rocky, losing Josh Philippe (1) in just the fourth ball. Kurtis Patterson (6 off 11) and Smith (18 off 16) also fell cheaply, leaving the Sixers reeling at 3-42 by the seventh over.

Patterson’s dismissal came courtesy of an extraordinary catch by Aaron Hardie. However, Hardie later dropped a simple chance off Smith when he was on 12. Fortunately for the Scorchers, David Payne (3-33) removed Smith with a caught-and-bowled soon after, limiting the damage. Still, fielding errors became a recurring theme throughout the game, plaguing the Sixers in particular.

A crucial partnership between Moises Henriques (58 off 43) and Jordan Silk (47* off 34) stabilized the innings for Sydney. But once Henriques was dismissed in the 17th over with the score at 130, the Sixers’ momentum fizzled out, managing just 21 more runs to finish at 8-151. The commentators noted that Sydney was likely 15 runs short of a genuinely competitive total.

Still, the Sixers started their defense aggressively, reducing the Scorchers to 3-22 by the fourth over. But with Bancroft at the crease and Turner soon joining him, Perth’s fortunes shifted.

Turner, a proven performer in high-stakes matches and a potential future Australian T20 captain, played a match-winning innings, scoring a career-best 84 off 47 balls. Both Turner and Bancroft (53* off 45) were aided by the Sixers’ poor fielding, with each batter being dropped at critical moments.

One particularly disastrous moment for the Sixers occurred in the 13th over when Bancroft, on 28, skied a chance. Philippe and Dan Christian hesitated, and the ball dropped between them, compounding the visitors’ fielding woes.

Ultimately, the Scorchers capitalized on these errors, cruising to victory and sealing their place in yet another BBL final. Ultimately, Bancroft sealed the victory for the Perth Scorchers, driving a boundary down the ground to bring up his half-century and send his team to their eighth Big Bash League final.

This achievement adds another chapter to the Scorchers’ storied history, which began in the inaugural BBL season 2011. Despite being tipped to finish last that year, Perth defied the odds to reach the final, where the Sixers defeated them. This match set the tone for many fierce battles between the two sides.

Perth has overcome significant obstacles this season, including losing key players Mitch Marsh and Phil Salt to season-ending injuries before the tournament began. Their top bowler, Jhye Richardson, who claimed 15 wickets before suffering a hamstring injury on January 4, hasn’t featured since. Hopes for his return in the final were dashed, as captain Ashton Turner confirmed post-match that Richardson wouldn’t be fit in time.

Despite these setbacks, the Scorchers remain the favorites to win the title, currently sitting at $1.45 with Sportsbet ahead of their final at Optus Stadium next Saturday at 7:30 pm (AEDT). The Sixers, whose odds have lengthened from $2.50 to $4 after the Qualifier loss, now face a must-win match on Thursday against the Renegades vs. Heat clash winner if they want another shot at the Scorchers in the final.

The Heat are priced at $9 to win the competition, with the Renegades slightly behind at $9.50.
