In a significant development ahead of the Big Bash League 2024-25 (BBL), Afghanistan’s T20I captain and renowned leg-spinner, Rashid Khan, has opted out of the tournament for the second year. Known for his remarkable performances with the Adelaide Strikers, Rashid’s decision to skip Australia’s premier T20 competition has disappointed fans, Cricket Australia (CA), and his BBL franchise.
Rashid Khan’s absence from the BBL draft for the 2024-25 season, scheduled for September 1, has dealt a heavy blow to the tournament. Over the years, Rashid has built a stellar reputation in the BBL, consistently delivering match-winning performances for the Adelaide Strikers. His leg-spin, sharp cricketing instincts, and dynamic style have made him a favorite among fans and a key team player.
Given his importance to the BBL’s profile and Adelaide Strikers’ success, Rashid’s decision to stay away from the tournament has led to widespread disappointment. As one of the most high-profile international players participating in the league, his withdrawal significantly impacts the competition’s appeal and fan engagement.
The question on everyone’s mind is: Why has Rashid chosen to sit out the BBL for two consecutive years? Last season, Rashid missed the BBL due to back surgery, but this time, the reason seems more complex. Tensions between Rashid and Cricket Australia (CA) appear to play a role in his decision.
In 2023, CA controversially canceled a scheduled ODI series against Afghanistan, citing concerns over the Taliban’s restrictive policies on girls’ education. This decision sparked frustration within the Afghan cricket community, including Rashid Khan, who publicly expressed his discontent. Rashid initially threatened to boycott the BBL following the cancellation of the ODI series, accusing CA of mixing sports with politics. Although he later participated in the BBL, this tension seems to have resurfaced, contributing to his decision to skip the tournament again.
Despite the strained relations between Rashid and CA, the Adelaide Strikers have remained hopeful and understanding. Reports suggest that Rashid’s manager informed the Strikers of his decision well in advance. While the Strikers are disappointed to lose their star player for another season, they have maintained a positive stance, expressing their eagerness to welcome him back in future editions of the BBL.
It is worth noting that the Strikers had been in regular contact with Rashid Khan, attempting to convince him to participate in the upcoming season. However, their efforts were unsuccessful, as the Afghan spinner showed little interest in playing in Australia’s T20 league. His decision leaves a void in the Strikers’ lineup. Still, they remain optimistic about the possibility of his return in subsequent years.
Cricket Australia has acknowledged the impact of Rashid’s absence. Still, it remains optimistic that the decision may not be entirely driven by past tensions. Sources within CA have hinted that scheduling conflicts could be a significant factor in Rashid’s withdrawal. The latter stages of the BBL 2024-25 are set to overlap with South Africa’s SA20 league, which Rashid is also a part of. This clash may have influenced his decision. Rashid is one of the most sought-after T20 players globally, participating in multiple leagues.
While political issues between CA and Afghanistan cricket may linger, the Afghan star’s decision may be more about managing his workload and commitments across different tournaments. Rashid has recently played in The Hundred 2024 for the Trent Rockets but suffered an injury during the game, which may also be a factor in his scheduling choices for the rest of the year.
Beyond the BBL, Rashid Khan has a packed international and franchise cricket schedule. After recovering from his injury in The Hundred, Rashid will next represent Afghanistan in a one-off Test against New Zealand starting on September 9. Following the Test, he will play in a three-match ODI series against South Africa beginning on September 18.
In addition to his international duties, Rashid will join MI New York for the third edition of the SA20 league in South Africa, which is set to start in early 2025. With such a tight schedule, it is plausible that Rashid has chosen to skip the BBL to focus on other commitments, including the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy scheduled in February. Franchise leagues, including the BBL, will likely feel the pinch as players like Rashid juggle multiple commitments leading to major international tournaments.
