Promising talent Sam Fanning is determined to capitalize on his impressive debut performance by securing an entire Big Bash contract for BBL|14. Having made a notable impact in his initial appearances, Fanning seeks to solidify his position within the team and contribute consistently throughout the season. With his eyes set on establishing himself as a key player, he is eager to build on the momentum from his debut and showcase his skills throughout the upcoming Big Bash League season.
Rising star Sam Fanning has signed a one-year contract to stay with the Perth Scorchers.
The Perth Scorchers have bolstered their squad’s future by signing 23-year-old top-order batter Sam Fanning to an entire contract for the upcoming season. Fanning, who previously joined as an injury replacement for Ashton Turner last summer, is now officially part of the team.
Recognized as a rising leader in Western Australian cricket, Sam Fanning’s signing coincides with his recent appointment as captain of the Scorchers squad for the Top End T20 Series, which begins in Darwin this week.
Fanning described his debut for the club as “a bit of a blur” but valued it as a crucial experience that expanded his opportunities across all game formats.
The stylish left-hander has made a name for himself in red-ball cricket, having moved from New South Wales to Western Australia for a rookie contract in 2021.
He was promoted to WA’s main squad in 2022 and has since played in five Sheffield Shield matches.
Enhancing his white-ball game is the next challenge for the powerful hitter, and he displayed encouraging signs during his debut for the Scorchers in the Eliminator Final against the Adelaide Strikers.
Perth Scorchers BBL|14 squad (as of now): Ashton Agar, Jason Behrendorff, Cooper Connolly, Sam Fanning, Aaron Hardie, Nick Hobson, Josh Inglis, Matthew Kelly, Mitch Marsh, Lance Morris, Jhye Richardson, Ashton Turner
Contract status: Liam Haskett, Hamish McKenzie, Sam Whiteman, Andrew Tye
Despite the high-pressure situation, Fanning appeared untroubled, scoring 31 runs off 20 balls at a strike rate of 155. He noted that the environment at the Scorchers is the “right place” for his limited-overs cricket to develop.
“I feel my white-ball game has evolved the last couple of seasons, particularly when it comes to taking the game on from the start,” he remarked.
“That said, there’s still heaps to learn, and I’m in the right place. We have a great coaching group and some seriously talented players.”
Fanning joins the club with fellow emerging talent Cooper Connolly, who has also extended his contract with the Scorchers.
BBL|12 Final hero Nick Hobson has also re-signed with the club, leaving Liam Haskett, Hamish McKenzie, Sam Whiteman, and Andrew Tye as the remaining Scorchers out of contract.
The club must still disclose international signings under the league’s new contracting system for overseas players, introducing updated regulations and mechanisms for recruiting players abroad. However, the team maintains retention rights for Laurie Evans, who was crucial to their success last season. Evans’ contributions were significant, and his potential return would be a valuable boost for the squad as they prepare for the upcoming season.
The club is set on achieving a record sixth title in KFC BBL|14, continuing their pursuit of dominance in the league. Their campaign will begin with a match against the Melbourne Stars on December 15, marking the start of what they hope will be another successful season. The team is focused on building on their past successes and adding to their impressive record, with their opening game providing an early opportunity to set the tone for the season ahead.
