The Big Bash League (BBL) enjoys immense popularity in Australia, much like the Indian Premier League (IPL) in India. Aussie fans eagerly anticipate the BBL season each year, which has become a significant event on the cricketing calendar. Many Australian cricketers also participate in this franchise T20 league, which typically runs during December and January.
The BBL 2024-25 schedule has been recently announced, with the tournament set to start on December 15 and culminate in the final on January 27. However, several critical Australian Test players will likely miss a significant portion of the season due to a scheduling conflict with Australia’s Test series against Sri Lanka and India, both scheduled for late 2024.
From November 2024 to January 2025, India will travel to Australia for a five-match Test series. The series starts with the first Test on November 22 at Perth Stadium and concludes on January 7. Immediately following this, Australia will host Sri Lanka for another Test series, running from January 7 to January 27. As a result, many of Australia’s Test players are expected to be unavailable for the latter stages of BBL 2024-25 due to their international commitments.
The BBL finals are set to take place from January 21 to January 27. As a result, many Australian Test players, particularly bowlers, are expected to miss a significant portion of the BBL 2024 season. High-profile players such as Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood have missed several BBL seasons due to their national commitments.
In a recent interview with ESPN Cricinfo, Alistair Dobson, the Head of the Big Bash League, confirmed that Australia will tour Sri Lanka following the India series, which concludes on January 7. He assured fans that local players will continue to provide exciting cricket throughout the season, ensuring that the BBL remains entertaining despite the absence of some star international players.
“We’ve seen the last couple of seasons the impact those local heroes have when they come back into the BBL. We’ve given ourselves a really good opportunity this year from a scheduling perspective with the window post the SCG Test before our team heads off to Sri Lanka for players to play a number of games”, Alistair Dobson said.
Dobson also noted that the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series is poised to be Australia’s most challenging Test series. The Australian team has faced difficulties recently, losing the last four Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against India.
“We’ve given ourselves every shot. That said a five-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy series is probably the toughest Test series our players will play in and that’s where their focus is”.
“We’ll work with them as that series goes through to understand what they can do and whether they can play some BBL games. We know they want to and we are optimistic we’ll see a number of them back again,” he further added.
The BBL 2024-25 season fixtures have been officially announced, generating excitement among fans and players alike. There will be an exciting opening to the event. The Perth Scorchers and Melbourne Stars squared off in the first game on December 15. This matchup promises to be an intense battle between two of the league’s most competitive teams, both eager to start the season on a high note.

All games will be scheduled in the afternoon according to Indian Standard Time, allowing international fans to catch the action live. The eight franchises participating in BBL 2024 include the Brisbane Heat, Adelaide Strikers, Melbourne Renegades, Perth Scorchers, Sydney Sixers, Melbourne Stars, Hobart Hurricanes, and Sydney Thunder. These teams represent six major Australian cities, each bringing its unique fan base and local flavor to the tournament.
