With seven balls remaining in their thrilling three-wicket victory over the Melbourne Stars at the MCG on Wednesday night, the Sydney Thunder narrowly escaped disaster and advanced to the finals.
Earlier in the day, Hobart’s upset over Brisbane propelled them into fifth place, putting pressure on Sydney to secure a win against the Stars in the last match of the regular season to guarantee a top-five finish. After restricting Melbourne to a modest total of 119 runs, the Thunder seemed to have secured their spot in the finals.
However, their chase quickly turned into a nail-biter as they found themselves at 5-60 in the 12th over. The situation worsened when Luke Wood ran out Ben Cutting in the 15th over, leaving the visitors struggling at 6-80. The tension mounted when Chris Green was caught by Adam Zampa at short fine leg. Still, in a critical moment, Zampa dropped what should have been an easy catch, allowing Green to continue at the crease with just one run.
Daniel Sams then capitalized on Zampa’s mistake, smashing two fours and a six in the following six balls, bringing the Thunder to 6-104 in the 17th over and steering them closer to victory.
Zampa got rid of Sams for 28 runs in 18 balls, which meant that with three wickets left, Sydney just needed 16 runs from 21 deliveries. Chris Green, who finished with six not out, and Nathan McAndrew, who contributed 12 not out, guided the Thunder to a final score of 7-120, pushing the Hurricanes back out of the top five at the last moment.
With this victory, the Thunder secured a fourth-place finish in the season. It will host Brisbane in the ‘Eliminator’ final on Friday night. The winner of that match will face the Melbourne Renegades in the ‘Knockout’ final at Marvel Stadium on Sunday night.
In the meantime, top teams Perth and the Sydney Sixers will clash in the ‘Qualifier’ final at Optus Stadium on Saturday night.
However, the Thunder may need to take on the Heat without their crucial bowler, Gurinder Sandhu. He injured his calf early in the match and could not continue after bowling in the first and third overs.
Earlier in the match, the Thunder’s bowling attack delivered a stellar performance, with five of their seven bowlers conceding 6.5 runs per over or less. This made it extremely difficult for the hosts, who had very few scoring opportunities, managing only seven fours and a single six. Usman Qadir stood out with figures of 3-24 from four overs, while Chris Green impressed with 2-19 from his four. Qadir claimed crucial wickets, including Marcus Stoinis (8), Tom Rogers (35), and Beau Webster (14), while Green accounted for Hilton Cartwright (36).
Despite dropping a crucial catch at a pivotal moment, Zampa was exceptional with the ball, taking 3-25 from his four overs, which included 10 dot balls. He effectively partnered with Liam Hatcher, Nathan Coulter-Nile, and Beau Webster to apply significant pressure on the Thunder, who went 32 balls without hitting a boundary and lost 4-29 during a critical stretch.
David Warner’s disappointing return to the Big Bash continued on Wednesday night, as he was dismissed for just two runs in the second over while attempting to pull a delivery from Luke Wood outside off stump, giving Tom Rogers an easy catch at mid-wicket. The celebrated Test opener has now totaled only 63 runs in five innings for Sydney, averaging a mere 12.60.
David Hussey, who accepted the position of men’s cricket head at Cricket Victoria, has coached his final match with the Stars. During his four years with the Stars, he led the team to 26 wins out of 59 matches, achieving a success rate of 44 percent. His tenure began with a finals appearance in his first season and concluded with a wooden spoon in his last.
