Adelaide Strikers’ Alex Carey is also set to return. At the same time, ODI World Cup final hero Travis Head will take a well-deserved break.

Australian cricket fans are set for a treat as star players Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne are likely to rejoin their clubs in the 13th Big Bash League (BBL). For the upcoming games, Adelaide Strikers player Alex Carey will also be returning. But Travis Head, the hero of the ODI World Cup final, is taking a well-earned vacation.

Khawaja and Labuschagne will suit up for the Brisbane Heat, a team enjoying an undefeated streak this season. As they prepare to face the Perth Scorchers at the Gabba on Wednesday, the return of these two key players generates excitement within the squad. The Brisbane Heat’s coach, Wade Seccombe, voiced hope about their return.

“It will be good for the group to have Usman and Marnus back around the team, especially as we get into the business end of the competition,” Seccombe was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

Adelaide Strikers confirm Travis Head will not be included in the Big Bash lineup after consultation with Cricket Australia

Meanwhile, the struggling Strikers, currently sitting sixth in the standings, will welcome the return of wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey as they aim for a late-season resurgence. Despite Carey’s comeback, the absence of Travis Head, a pivotal figure in the team’s setup, has raised concerns about the Strikers’ playoff chances.

“In consultation with Cricket Australia medical staff, Travis Head will not be available for Big Bash selection during the break between international Test series,” a statement released by Adelaide Strikers mentioned.

As BBL 2024 nears its climax, these player returns are expected to intensify the competition. With six wins in eight matches, the Brisbane Heat have already secured a top-three finish and will aim to strengthen their position in the upcoming clash against the Perth Scorchers.

Star players like Steve Smith and David Warner are also expected to join the BBL soon. Smith will play for the Sydney Sixers against the Sydney Thunder, and Warner, who is presently in town for family festivities, will return following his brother’s wedding.

BBL 2024: Usman Khawaja Showcases Dove and Olive Branch Symbols on Bat and Shoes

The Brisbane Heat defeated the Perth Scorchers by a margin of 23 runs. Star Australian batter Usman Khawaja showcased the dove and olive branch symbol on his shoes and bat during Brisbane Heat’s match against the Perth Scorchers in the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL). Khawaja previously attempted to display the same symbol during the Test series against Pakistan. Still, the International Cricket Council (ICC) intervened and asked him to remove it. He was not granted permission to proceed despite multiple meetings with Cricket Australia and ICC officials.

Khawaja has been outspoken about the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict and sought to use his platform to raise awareness. However, the ICC did not approve his request. In response, the 37-year-old wore a black armband on the opening day of the Boxing Day Test at the MCG, initially interpreted as a form of protest. However, Khawaja later clarified it was for a personal bereavement.

The symbol on Khawaja’s shoes and bat notably reflects Article One of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which states: ‘All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.”

Neser’s Brilliance Secures Victory for Heat Over Scorchers

Batting first at The Gabba in the 13th edition of the BBL, Brisbane Heat faced early challenges as captain Usman Khawaja fell for 14 runs and opening partner Colin Munro was dismissed for just 2 runs. Marnus Labuschagne stabilized the innings with a valuable 45 runs, but the Heat needed a big finish. Michael Neser delivered a match-winning performance, scoring an unbeaten 64 runs off 30 balls to help the Heat post a competitive total of 191 runs.

In response, the Perth Scorchers struggled to build momentum. Despite Josh Inglis and Laurie Evans’ partnership efforts, their wickets fell quickly, leading to a collapse. The Scorchers ultimately lost by 23 runs, remaining in second place on the points table, while the Brisbane Heat strengthened their lead at the top.
