BBL 2023-24: Mujeeb ur Rahman Dropped from Renegades Due to ACB Sanctions

Mujeeb ur Rahman has been sanctioned by the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) for opting out of central contracts. As a result, the spinner will not be participating in the Melbourne Renegades’ upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) 2023-24 match against the Melbourne Stars on Tuesday, January 2, at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Mujeeb-Ur-Rahman

The ACB’s sanctions follow Mujeeb’s decision, alongside teammates Naveen-ul-Haq and Fazalhaq Farooqi, to prioritize T20 leagues over national duties. The board’s response includes a two-year ban on issuing No Objection Certificates (NOCs) for these players, preventing them from participating in global T20 leagues during this period and revoking any existing NOCs.

Initially, the Renegades management indicated they had not been informed of Mujeeb’s unavailability and expressed their continued support for him throughout the season. However, on Monday, January 1, they announced his removal from the squad in light of the recent sanctions.

“Mujeeb Ur Rahman has been removed from the squad after a change to his NOC conditions made him unavailable for the match,” said Melbourne Renegades in a statement.

Mujeeb Ur Rahman’s Key Performance Secures Renegades’ First Win of the Season

The Melbourne Renegades’ success in their season opener was greatly aided by Mujeeb ur Rahman. Mujeeb had a great effort in the team’s December 29 game against the Adelaide Strikers, capturing three wickets for just twenty runs in four overs. His contribution was critical to the Renegades securing their first win of the season. Currently, Mujeeb is tied for fourth place among the season’s top wicket-takers, with seven wickets from six matches, averaging 22.42 and maintaining an economy rate of 7.47.

In contrast, his teammates Naveen-ul-Haq and Fazalhaq Farooqi have expressed their intention to return to national duty. Consequently, both players have been included in Afghanistan’s 18-member squad for the ongoing T20I series against the UAE. However, Mujeeb did not make the squad.

The UAE won the second T20I series match by an innings margin, although Afghanistan won the first. The series is now level at one. The third and final game of the series is scheduled for Tuesday, January 2, at Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

“To everyone who’s been part of the journey with me – our members, fans, supporters, my team-mates and all who have had a part to play at the club at all levels – thank you,” Finch said.

Aaron Finch has revealed that the current Big Bash League (BBL) season will be his last. At 37, Finch will retire from the BBL with Melbourne Renegades, marking the end of his tenure in the tournament. Although his retirement is specific to the BBL, it is anticipated that Finch may also step away from significant franchise cricket globally.

“There’ve been some real lows but great highs [too], and I’ve loved every bit of the journey; no moment can compare to winning the BBL title. That, for me, was very special, and something I’ll remember. I’m really proud to have played at one club for the entirety of my career. The Renegades have been a huge part of my life, and I’m so grateful for everything they’ve given me,” Finch was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

“To everyone who’s been part of the journey with me – our members, fans, supporters, my team-mates and all who have had a part to play at the club at all levels – thank you,” he added.

Although Aaron Finch is not currently in the Melbourne Renegades’ lineup, the team plans to honor him with a farewell match against the Melbourne Stars. As the second-highest run-scorer in BBL history, behind Chris Lynn, Finch has significantly impacted the tournament. Over his 106-match career, Finch has amassed 3,311 runs at an average of 34.85 and a strike rate of 131.28, including two centuries and 26 half-centuries.

David Saker Praises Finch as an Exceptional Contributor

Following the retirement announcement, the Renegades’ head coach, David Saker, praised Finch for his outstanding career, emphasizing how rare it is for a player to spend his entire BBL career with a single club.

“Finchy has been an outstanding servant and leader with the Renegades; it’s such a rare feat in the Big Bash to spend your career at the one club, Finchy has been an outstanding servant and leader with the Renegades; it’s such a rare feat in the Big Bash to spend your career at the one club,” Saker said.

Renegades general manager James Rosengarten said: “It’s almost impossible to quantify what Finchy has done for the Melbourne Renegades as a club and brand, and for the BBL as a competition,” he said. “He brought fans through the gates and led this club through highs and lows – all with the trademark grit and determination that we know him for.”
