Alex Carey stumped Jonny Bairstow during the second Test of the 2023 Ashes.
Australia’s wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey revisited the controversial stumping of Jonny Bairstow from the 2023 Ashes during a Big Bash League 2023-24 match between the Adelaide Strikers and Hobart Hurricanes on Tuesday, January 9, at the Adelaide Oval. Carey played for the Strikers and scored a sharp stumping in the seventh of the first innings.
The 32-year-old swiftly collected a wide down the leg side and dislodged the bails as Nikhil Chaudhary lost his balance. The replay showed Chaudhary’s foot on the line, leading to the third umpire declaring him out for a diamond duck. Speaking with the commentators after the incident, Carey shared that he enjoys getting batters out via stumpings, whether standing up to the stumps or further back.
“Yeah, always happy to get a stumping mate, however it comes. Up to the stumps or back. So that was good mate,” said Carey while speaking during the game.
During the first session, Carey stumped Bairstow on Day 5 of the second Test of the 2023 Ashes at Lord’s. The incident occurred in the 52nd over of England’s second innings, bowled by Cameron Green. As the ball reached Carey’s gloves, Bairstow casually stepped out of his crease. Spotting the opportunity, the Australian wicketkeeper threw the ball underarm at the stumps, catching Bairstow short of his ground, and he was subsequently declared out.
The stumping sent shockwaves through the cricketing world, with Australia facing criticism for allegedly not upholding the spirit of the game. Some Australian players were even confronted by MCC members in the Lord’s Long Room, leading to those members being temporarily banned from the stadium.
In addition to his sharp stumping, Carey’s knock of 36, which included four fours and a six, helped Adelaide successfully chase down 166 in 19.2 overs.
