Amanda-Jade Wellington, the Australian bowler, has guided the Oval Invincibles back to form with a convincing seven-wicket win over the Manchester Originals in The Hundred.
A match-winning 67-run partnership between Paige Scholfield and Marizanne Kapp led the chase after the hosts posted 4-125 in the English competition at Old Trafford, Manchester.
Scholfield blasted 48 off 27 balls in top form, following opener Chamari Athapaththu’s solid start with 33 from 36 balls.
The Invincibles were equally impressive in the field, showcasing a series of sharp catches. Leg-spinner Wellington, who also represents South Australia in the Women’s National Cricket League and the Adelaide Strikers in the Weber WBBL, stood out as the top bowler with figures of 2-22.
Following a slow start, openers Laura Wolvaardt and fellow Australian star Beth Mooney struck the boundary seven times in just 15 balls.
Mooney, the second overall draft pick, was beginning to accelerate when Seren Smale took a sharp catch at short third off Ryana MacDonald-Gay. MacDonald-Gay then made an even better catch at mid-on shortly after to dismiss Woolvardt, the competition’s second-highest run-scorer.
The Originals began to falter before captain Sophie Ecclestone contributed a crucial unbeaten 26 off 15 balls.
The Invincibles pursued their target with Sri Lanka star Athapaththu and captain Lauren Winfield-Hill forming a 48-run partnership for the first wicket.
Alice Monaghan dismissed Winfield-Hill and Alice Capsey in rapid succession. When Athapaththu fell lbw, the score was 3-60, leaving some work to be done.
Scholfield quickly eased any nerves by hitting the boundary seven times. At the same time, Kapp contributed 19 runs, leading the Invincibles to victory with seven balls remaining.
Meanwhile, the Northern Superchargers strengthened their position in the top three with a commanding performance, dismissing the Phoenix for just 54.
Australia star and Phoenix captain Ellyse Perry gave the home side a strong start by taking a wicket with her third delivery and dismissing opposing skipper Holly Armitage on the first ball.
This brought the formidable Phoebe Litchfield to the crease, but Perry (2-13) caught her behind.
Fellow Australian Annabel Sutherland and Alice Davidson-Richards (49 not out) then guided the visitors to 68 before Emily Arlott dismissed Sutherland with 40 balls remaining.
In their reply to 5-115, the Phoenix struggled from the outset, collapsing to 4-14 and losing critical players, including opener Sterre Kalis, Perry, England wicketkeeper Amy Jones, and India international Richa Ghosh.
