Once again establishing themselves as the dominant team in the Big Bash League (BBL), the Perth Scorchers have locked up a home qualifying final at the top of the table. their fortress, The Furnace. Their journey to the top was capped off with a dramatic 10-run win over the Melbourne Renegades on Sunday evening in what many call one of the best matches of the BBL season.
The match got off to an intense start after Renegades captain Aaron Finch won the toss and elected to field, putting the Scorchers into bat. Perth were clear about their objectives from the first ball. The opening pair of Cameron Bancroft and Stephen Eskinazi gave their side a blistering start, with both batsmen quickly finding their rhythm.
Bancroft was the show’s star, hammering 95 runs off just 50 deliveries. His innings were filled with powerful shots around the ground, making it difficult for the Renegades bowlers to contain him. Bancroft’sBancroft’s calm yet aggressive approach at the crease was vital in setting the high total of 5-212. Although he missed out on what would have been a well-deserved century, his knock laid a solid foundation for the Scorchers.
Eskinazi, too, played a pivotal role in Perth’s innings. The opener made his intentions known early, smashing Tom Rogers for 10 runs in the very first over. Eskinazi’s aggressive approach kept the pressure on the Renegades, and his contribution of 54 off 29 balls marked only his second career half-century. Bancroft and Eskinazi added 61 runs in the powerplay, putting the Scorchers in a commanding position from the outset.
As Perth surged forward, the Renegades faced an unexpected setback when their bowler, David Moody, was removed from the attack. Moody, who hails from Perth and is the nephew of former Western Australia coach Tom Moody, was red-carded after delivering two consecutive waist-high beamers. His bowling figures were rare, ending with an economy rate of 48 after just 0.1 overs, conceding eight runs in his brief and chaotic spell. This sudden departure meant the Renegades had to continue with one less bowling option, weakening their defense against the Scorcher’s explosive batting lineup.
Despite the early struggles, the Renegades showed resilience, with several Western Australian connections stepping up for Melbourne. Former Scorcher Shaun Marsh opened the batting for the Renegades and delivered a solid performance, scoring 54 off 34 balls. His innings gave the Renegades hope in an uphill battle to chase down the Scorchers’ massive total.
The real turning point for the Renegades came when Aaron Finch walked out to bat at No. 4. Finch, known for his ability to change the course of a game, launched a stunning counterattack in the later stages of the innings. In the 18th over, Finch took on Andrew Tye, smashing him for an incredible 31 runs, including multiple sixes. This onslaught reignited Melbourne’s hopes of pulling off an unlikely victory.
Over the last three overs, the Renegades managed to score 57 runs, with 18 coming in the final over alone. Finch’s aggressive knock kept the crowd on the edge of their seats. Still, despite his efforts, the Renegades ultimately fell short by just 10 runs in a high-scoring thriller.
The game wasn’t without its share of dramatic moments beyond the scoreboard. Late in the game, Finch’s shot appeared to bounce off Kelly’s bat and hit him in the face, terrifying striker Matt Kelly. The bowler, caught completely off-guard, was left bloodied from a cut near his mouth and had to be helped off the field. Despite the serious scare, Kelly was reportedly in a high mood following the game. However, his condition will be closely monitored before the Scorchers’ next game.
With the win, the Perth Scorchers ended the regular season with an impressive record of 11 wins and just three losses. Their consistency throughout the season has earned them the top spot on the BBL table, and they secured a crucial home qualifying final at The Furnace.
Despite their third loss in the last five games, the Renegades remain in fourth place and still have a chance to secure a finals berth. Next Tuesday, they must beat the Adelaide Strikers at Marvel Stadium to lock in their spot.
As the BBL playoffs approach, the Scorchers are now the clear favorites to win the competition, with odds of $2.25 to defend their title. Hot on their heels are the Sydney Sixers, priced at $2.50 after defeating Perth in a close contest last weekend. Other contenders include the Brisbane Heat at $9, the Hobart Hurricanes at $12, and the Renegades at $18.
