Shanto Meets All The Criteria to Get Started – Bangladesh Premier League

Following the post-match press conference on Wednesday, Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto was questioned whether transitioning from playing for his Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) franchise to representing the national team had contributed to his recent resurgence in form. The question aimed to explore whether the change in environment and the different demands of national team cricket had played a role in Shanto’s improved performance and consistency with the bat.

He responded with a casual shrug, implying that whether the change from his BPL franchise to the national team had impacted his form was uncertain and not something he was mainly focused on. His main concern was performing well on the field. During the game, he effectively fulfilled his role. He contributed to Bangladesh’s success, as the team leveled the T20I series against Sri Lanka with an impressive eight-wicket win in Sylhet. His performance was instrumental in the victory, demonstrating his ability to rise to the occasion and deliver when it mattered most.

Shanto’s best score in the BPL was 39 across 12 innings, with an average of less than 15. In summary, his performance in the BPL was disappointing across all formats, especially for the newly appointed national team captain. However, the Bangladesh bowling unit delivered a much more disciplined performance than the previous game, and the top order, including Shanto, scored some valuable runs.

“It feels good to win the match. I think in both matches we played good cricket. We were unlucky not to win the last match but the way we played as a team, very happy about that.

“Yes, the BPL did not go well but I am still trying to overcome the lackings in my batting. Fortunately, it was a bit better today and would try to continue,” he mentioned.

It was surprising to see Shanto join Towhid Hridoy and Anamul Haque for a batting session yesterday afternoon of the match.

Newly-appointed batting coach David Hemp had a detailed conversation with the captain about his head position, highlighting that there might be a need for adjustments in his weight transfer and shoulder alignment. This technical critique aimed to fine-tune his batting mechanics to enhance his performance. During a batting session that followed, the captain was seen executing some of his favorite shots with improved confidence and precision.

While these technical adjustments were crucial, the session also had a significant mental component. By working on his technique and gaining clarity in his approach, the captain may have addressed the cognitive aspects of his game, which contributed to his overall improvement. This combination of technical fine-tuning and mental focus has enhanced his performance on the field.

“I was working on my batting but don’t want to say what it was since it’s a technical matter. It’s not something like I worked on it today and got success. I have been trying to correct it for a while and it’s getting better slowly and there is more to improve,” When asked about his session, Shanto commented.

What mattered was finishing the game at his own pace, avoiding unnecessary risks while adapting his approach to the match situation.

“It’s not important to score fifty. What’s important is how effective it is what I am doing for the team. So I was able to do that and the best thing was that I was able to finish the game,” Shanto remarked after concluding the game with a decisive six to secure the victory, finishing unbeaten with 53 off 38 balls.

The bowling unit also made fewer mistakes, with consistent line and length and effective variations that kept Sri Lanka on their toes.

“I feel that in the middle part of the innings, our bowling plan was very good on what we wanted to do,” the 25-year-old added.

When asked about the unchanged eleven, he remarked, “It was important [to keep faith in the same eleven]. We lost one game in the final over, so there was not much lacking which is why myself and the coaching staff didn’t think of a change.”

It was crucial to demonstrate faith in the team as Shanto continued progressing and meeting the essential requirements.
