“Actually, Shakib’s [Al Hasan] batting, he is not in rhythm,” Bangladesh selector Hannan Sarkar addressed the media during a press conference in Mirpur, where he discussed the team’s preparation and expectations. The press conference occurred after he officially announced the 16-member squad selected for the upcoming Test series against India, scheduled for later this month.
Sarkar emphasized the series’ importance and shared insights into the selection process, highlighting the squad’s mix of experience and new talent. He expressed confidence in the team’s potential to perform well against a formidable Indian side and looked forward to competitive matches.
Shakib’s recent struggles with the bat have become a focal point of discussion, raising concerns among fans and analysts alike. The spotlight on his performance has intensified as observers debate whether the 37-year-old cricketer has reached the end of his peak years as a batter or is on the verge of a comeback.
The questions surrounding Shakib’s form are fueled by his fluctuating performances and the natural aging process. While some speculate that he may have seen better days, others believe a single standout inning could restore his confidence and signal a return to his best. This uncertainty about his future highlights the broader debate about longevity and peak performance in professional sports.
Test cricket’s extended format allows players more time to adapt to varying conditions and recover from setbacks. However, it also comes with rigorous challenges, demanding resilience and strategic thinking over prolonged periods. Unlike shorter formats, Test matches test a player’s endurance, technique, and mental strength to a greater degree.
In this context, the Bangladesh team management is optimistic that the unique challenges of Test cricket will benefit Shakib, who has been grappling with inconsistent batting performances. The slower pace and longer duration of Test matches could allow Shakib to rebuild his confidence and work through his technical issues. By facing these demanding conditions, the hope is that Shakib will be able to regain his form and emerge stronger, ultimately helping the team in their upcoming fixtures.
Shakib’s bat remained unproductive during the Pakistan series and the preceding Global T20 league in Canada. Since the last ODI World Cup in India, where his eye issues first emerged, he has not featured in any ODIs. In Test cricket, his most recent half-century was scored against Ireland last year.
According to sources from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), Shakib’s eye problem continues to be an issue. The recent adjustment in his stance, starting from the Asia Cup in Pakistan and Sri Lanka last year, is primarily attributed to the blurry vision in his right eye.
“He has been prescribed rest; he needs a big gap,” a source from the BCB stated.
At this stage of his career, Shakib cannot afford an extended break that would keep him away from playing for an extended period.
He recently played for Surrey in the County Championship Division One, where he made an impact with the ball, taking nine wickets across two innings, including a five-wicket haul. However, he has not yet addressed the ongoing concerns about his batting.
“He won’t be able to get that kind of rest now, so he will have to manage it,” sources close to the situation told The Daily Star.
If there’s a Bangladeshi cricketer capable of defying expectations and current form to tackle a challenge, it’s Shakib. Although batting in Pakistan has been challenging, his dismissals were similar to those of other Bangladeshi batters. He struggled with the movement of Pakistan’s pace bowlers on the third day of the second Rawalpindi Test, and so did his teammates. His final innings in Pakistan demonstrated that he still can fight through demanding conditions.
According to Hannan’s assessment, it’s only a matter of time before Shakib overcomes his batting difficulties.
“I believe, given the standards he has set, it’s just a matter of time — just one innings away. It’s always a concern for the opposition when Shakib is at the wicket. No one rates Shakib based on two to five innings, and neither do we,” he remarked.
