Pakistan batter Mohammad Haris was all set to make his mark in the 2024 Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) playing for the Chattogram Challengers. The tournament’s excitement had built up, with fans and players eager to see what the season would bring. With his explosive hitting approach, Harris was expected to be an important member of his squad. However, upon landing in Bangladesh, Haris faced an unexpected setback when he discovered that his No Objection Certificate (NOC) had been revoked by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
The NOC is a crucial document that allows players to participate in overseas leagues, and its revocation left Haris in a lurch. The news was disappointing and puzzling as he arrived with high hopes and aspirations. The PCB restricts players from participating in only two overseas franchise leagues outside the Pakistan Super League (PSL). With this policy in place, Haris found himself in a difficult position. This potential stint with the Chattogram Challengers would have counted as his third overseas league appearance within a year.
The PCB’s stringent regulations on overseas participation protect the integrity and schedule of domestic cricket, particularly the PSL, which is considered a pivotal platform for players to showcase their talents. While these rules ensure that players remain committed to domestic cricket, they can also lead to unfortunate situations for players like Haris, who are eager to gain international exposure and experience.
Haris’s situation is particularly noteworthy given the competitive landscape of T20 leagues globally. In recent years, many players have benefited from participating in various leagues worldwide, enhancing their skills and marketability. However, with the PCB’s limitations, players have fewer opportunities to gain valuable experience abroad.
From July 2023 to July 2024, Haris participated in the Lanka Premier League (LPL) and the Global T20 Canada, playing for B-Love Kandy and Surrey Jaguars, respectively. These experiences, while enriching, meant he had already exhausted his quota for overseas leagues during this period. The LPL and Global T20 Canada are notable competitions that allow players to hone their skills against international talents. Haris’s performances in these leagues showcased his ability and potential, but the NOC revocation effectively sidelined him from further opportunities in the BPL.
This unfortunate twist not only thwarted his immediate ambitions but also curtailed his chances of further development in a highly competitive environment. T20 leagues are known for their fast-paced games and the intense competition they foster, which can significantly enhance a player’s performance under pressure.
Naturally, Haris was disappointed by the turn of events. In an age where social media serves as a platform for players to share their thoughts and emotions, Haris took to Instagram to express his feelings. He thanked the Chattogram franchise for their support and for arranging his return home. This gesture not only reflected his gratitude but also underscored the camaraderie that exists within the cricketing community, even amid disappointments.
“Thank you, Chattogram team management and the BCB for taking care of me and giving me this opportunity. “I also flew in on time to prepare myself to give some great games to my fans in Bangladesh. Unfortunately, my NOC was not issued. Hence, I will not play any games. I knew my team needed me. Hopefully, I will join them next year. I will definitely miss playing the BPL,” Haris was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo.
Harris was one of many Pakistani players navigating the complexities of overseas participation. Other notable players who were granted their NOCs to compete in the BPL and ILT20 were Fakhar Zaman, Babar Azam, Haris Rauf, and Shaheen Afridi. Among this group, Shaheen Afridi stands out as the only player confirmed to participate in the ILT20, where he is set to play for the Desert Vipers. He will join fellow Pakistanis Mohammad Amir and Azam Khan, further strengthening the representation of Pakistani talent in international leagues.
The contrasting fates of these players highlight the unpredictable nature of cricket and the intricacies of managing international careers. While some players are set to make significant contributions in prestigious leagues, others, like Haris, find themselves sidelined due to administrative decisions.
