On Wednesday, in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) match against the Khulna Tigers, Liton Das ended his recent string of disappointing performances with the bat. He delivered a much-needed boost to his form by smashing four sixes and two fours, accumulating 45 runs from 30 balls. This innings was significant as it represented more than half of the runs he had scored in his previous five BPL innings combined. Moreover, it stood out as his highest score in the ongoing edition of the tournament, marking a positive turnaround in his performance and providing a glimmer of hope for better results in future matches.

How did Liton’s knock and Aamer Jamal’s five-wicket haul secure Comilla’s win?

Liton Das’s crucial innings guided his team to 149 for seven, providing a solid foundation for the match. In the second innings, Aamer Jamal’s exceptional performance with the ball, claiming five wickets, played a pivotal role in dismantling the opposition and ultimately securing a victory for Comilla. Jamal’s five-wicket haul was instrumental in ensuring that Comilla’s effort with the bat was complemented by a strong showing with the ball, leading to their success in the match.

“We have a few shortcomings playing in the middle order. We suffer from this even in the Bangladesh team. We can’t play in the middle overs when we get a start in the Powerplay. When we do well in the middle overs, we can’t finish,” Liton addressed reporters following Wednesday’s match.

“We are still in the learning stages. It is not like we are a good team. As we keep playing matches in the BPL, we will manage to learn how to play the middle overs,” he continued.

Comilla came out aggressively in their innings, setting the tone early by racing to 46 runs without losing a wicket during the Powerplay. Liton Das was the driving force behind this fast start, delivering a powerful batting display. He launched all four of his sixes within the first six overs, taking full advantage of the fielding restrictions and putting the Khulna Tigers on the back foot from the beginning. His explosive hitting provided Comilla with a solid foundation, ensuring they built momentum early in the match, which proved crucial to their overall performance.

Although Comilla began their innings with significant momentum, reaching 46 runs without loss during the Powerplay, their scoring pace significantly slowed as the innings progressed. Over the next nine overs, they could only accumulate an additional 51 runs, with their run rate dropping to under six runs per over. This slowdown hindered their ability to fully capitalize on the solid foundation laid by Liton in the early overs. Tight bowling from the opposition and a lack of boundaries during the middle phase contributed to Comilla’s inability to maintain their initial scoring rhythm.

A brief but impactful cameo from Jaker Ali, who scored 18 off just eight balls, pushed Comilla closer to the 150 mark after Will Jacks and Towhid Hridoy were dismissed following slower-paced innings with strike rates below 100.

The low quality of the wickets has often been cited as a critical factor behind the dull matches. Still, Liton quickly shifted some of the responsibility away from the pitches. He emphasized that batters also need to be more proactive in scoring runs.

“You can’t always blame the wickets. Those who can play taking calculative risks can score on this ground. There was a situation today from when we could’ve scored 170. No one would’ve blamed the wicket if we got there.
