Shakib Al Hasan Faces Eye Issue from ODI World Cup 2023, Set to Miss Dhaka Leg with Rangpur Riders
Rangpur Riders will reportedly be without veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan for the initial matches of the Dhaka leg in the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). The 36-year-old captain is currently dealing with an eye issue, as noted in a recent report by Cricbuzz. He is scheduled to leave for Singapore on Sunday, January 21, for a thorough check-up to address this concerning health matter.
Shakib, the captain of Bangladesh, participated in Rangpur Riders’ opening and only BPL match of the new season. The franchise expects the veteran star to be ready for the Sylhet leg. “He (Shakib) is leaving for Sylhet today and we are expecting him to be available during the Sylhet phase if he recovers from his eye problem. Let’s hope for the best but if that is not the case we have to play with our available resources,” Riders chief executive office Ishtiaque Sadeque told Cricbuzz.
Notably, Riders skipper Nurul Hasan also admitted that Shakib was having an issue with his eye. “He (Shakib) has been struggling with eyesight problem for some time now. I think he has been in touch with the doctors regularly. The doctors only could say in what stage the problem is now,” Nurul said after their loss to Fortune Barisal.
The 10th season of the BPL kicked off on January 19 at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka, with a festive atmosphere as fans gathered to support their teams. So far, four matches have been played, all hosted in Dhaka, and the tournament has showcased some competitive cricket. With more matches scheduled in the coming days, the excitement around the BPL continues to build.
Rangpur Riders will take the Dhaka field against Sylhet Strikers on January 23. This match is crucial as both teams want to establish momentum early in the tournament. Shakib’s leadership would have been invaluable in this clash, given his vast experience and strategic understanding of the game. The Riders must rely on their other players to step up in his absence, showcasing their depth and resilience.
Notably, the Sylhet leg of the tournament kicks off on January 26, with the Riders set to face Khulna Tigers in the opening match of that phase. This transition is crucial for all teams, as the conditions may vary, impacting gameplay strategies. The Riders are optimistic that Shakib will be able to rejoin them in time for this leg, providing a much-needed boost to their campaign. His presence would enhance the team’s performance and uplift the morale of younger players looking to learn from a seasoned veteran.
As the BPL progresses, the importance of player fitness and health cannot be overstated. Injuries and health issues can dramatically change the landscape of a tournament, making depth in squad selection essential. Teams are constantly assessing their players’ conditions and making adjustments as needed, so the news of Shakib’s departure for medical attention is a significant development.
The BPL, now in its 10th season, has become a cornerstone of Bangladeshi cricket, attracting talent from both domestic and international players. The tournament provides a platform for emerging cricketers to showcase their skills while allowing established players like Shakib to continue their legacy in the sport. The stakes are high, and every match counts as teams vie for the championship title.
